Dream Host $9.24 for a year, did I get a good deal?

I just signed up for DreamHost and used code "777" for a year, reduced it supposedly 92% to $9.24 for a year for unlimited domains. Did I get a good deal, or do they do this all the time? LOL

Supposedly, the code is only good today, so I got suckered in.

Well $9.24 for a year is really good, but I've heard some bad things about Dreamhost. You get what you pay for I guess. It should be decent to start out with though.

I used DH for 2 years, beginning with the same 777 deal. For the price, you can't beat it, but they are not perfect.

    My main issues included:

    1) Connections to the SQL server were slow which made loading DB-driven sites painful at times.

    2) I got on the front page of Digg one day. They simply disabled my site and did not e-mail or anything. When I finally noticed it a couple hours later, because the site was completely offline (not even a "we'll be back soon" placeholder), I contacted them and they gave some BS about how they thought it was a DDoS attack, blah blah. Sure, it's shared hosting but at least e-mail me stating what they did...

I've since moved-on, but for $10/year, it might be worth using DH to serve static content (i.e. like Amazon S3) as the static stuff seemed fast enough. That way, you can buy a premium shared host for the scripting/etc. and burn the bandwidth and storage of DH for the product downloads or whatever.

It is good, but dreamhost really angered me badly when I used them two years ago. Just really set up weird, and was having trouble with mysql.

Tony Blake uses Dreamhost for his Simple Machines Forum. He mentioned one time that he had over 200 people watching a hot video without a forum hiccup or slowdown. He was pretty happy with that. You do see negative comments about them but you also see some pretty serious marketers on this board also that recommend them.

Their prices can't be beaten, especially the $9.24 one. Dreamhost is always a good started for new web masters in my opinion. When you become bigger, you start joining better branded hosting sites like Media Temple.

I tried to sign up far an account using the code (said it was still good on the Hompage) but it wanted $200 for three years. I didn't see any way to change the 3 years part of it. I just found how to change it to one year, but now it says you can't use that promo code with that plan. Time to go to work, maybe I will try when I get home.

One other thing in addition to my post above:

DH uses a custom control panel. IMO, it's very well done, but it is NOT Cpanel or any of the others you may be used to. So, if you ever go to move away from DH, you cannot use the moving service that many hosts will offer if the source site is on Cpanel, for example. With that said, in some ways, I like the DH panel better than the Cpanel my current host uses, but the ease of moving may be an issue with some people.

Dreamhost was the first hosting service I ever signed up with. They had a similar offer at the time, for an anniversary I think ($110 off a $120 yearly plan).

Their interface is a bit tricky but has Wordpress one click install so if you're using it for WP all's good. I'd use it for "quick" or small sites... it's always good to have a few hosting accounts, however I wouldn't host anything too big on it.

I have been using DH for about 5 years now. I've never had any serious issues with them, their hellp desk is pretty much on top of things. I have site monitors that watch my site for down time, its a really RARE occasion i have downtime.

all kinds of 1 click install programs. WP comes with the host, installs in about 10 minutes. more storage, emails and db's than i'll ever use. worth the money in my opinion.

The price is not bad if you are planning on a website that will remain small and be more of a personal website. If you are planning on having a lot of traffic, downloads, etc then you will want to go with a company that has faster servers and offers more space. Dreamhost isn't terrible but if you start getting a lot of traffic you will see a huge slowdown, also remember Google can penalize websites in search engines if the pages do not load within a certain amount of time when spidered.

Thats's a good price for someone starting out that's for sure. You can always move to biger and badder if you out grow them. I pretty sure every webhost has their issues so you take the good with the bad sometimes
