I was advised since I am new to purchasing banner ads that I should go with pricing that is based upon a fixed monthly cost, as opposed to, CPM.

However, I found a site on which I wanted to place a banner ad and the pricing was a fixed dollar amount for a fixed number of impressions. Is this the same as fixed cost pricing? If not is this an OK purchase to make if you are new to placing banner ads?

Advice is greatly appreciated.

Okay first just don't go out spending money on banners. Make sure that you put banners up on sites that's targeted to whatever you are promoting. That way you get fairly well increase in conversions for sales. Also only use animated banners if you can as these banners always seem to get a higher click thru rate. Banner advertising is a good way to get clicks but there are better ways of marketing your website like social networking, email marketing, video marketing, or forum marketing. Its completely up to you but I hope this helps you in some sort of way. I personally would recommend you do search engine marketing as you will have more conversions with this source of web traffic.

Even if it is a fixed monthly cost, the site will know roughly how many impressions they get per month and so they are actually charging you on a CPM basis but just calling it something different.

I don't really see what the difference is.

If buying a banner on a monthly basis I would still not do so without them first telling me how many impressions I am likely to get. Once I know how many impressions I am going to get and the cost I am paying then I would work out my CPM anyway.

So yeah, not sure what the difference is and why this person told you that.

This. It's essentially the same thing but just a different wording. Also be sure to test and tweak your ad and sales funnel if you choose to go through with banner advertising. Paid advertising can get costly if not done and managed properly.

I like to try and negotiate a deal with them where they get 100% commissions on any sales generated through there site.

You can only do this if you have your own product, and have a good backend, but hey, it's another option.

Most of the time, you will get less leads from banners. So, Prepared to ask them, Whether you can able to switch more banners to split test before paying.

In the past, when ever I went out and bought an ad space, I would pay a monthly fee and there was no CPM.

I have never tried to use CPM before and don't think I will. Maybe I am missing out and maybe I am not but I would rather pay a one time fee to have my banner shown on that particular site for a whole month without any additional fees.

If you are going to buy CPM ads, I would track to see their results.

I would personally test things out to see what works better because everyone has different results.
