Default RSS illiterate needs help

I've learned in-depth webpage and graphic design, audio technology and I know 4 languages. So I'm not an idiot or a technophobe... but RSS totally confounds me. I have a block against it worse than any writer's block.

A year ago I bought BadASS RSS and I can't figure it out. I also have several guides and I've studied dozens of "expert" websites but none of this has made a dent in my thick head.

Who can help? All I want to do for a start is create my own RSS file and place the link and icon on my website. I'm into it for promotion. I'm not interested in collating or reading RSS feeds from others, unless it helps me in my quest for traffic.

I'm not asking for free stuff, although that's always a bonus. I'm happy to pay for a good guide but it has to deliver the goods. Nothing has so far. Even better, I'd be happy to pay someone to set me up with what I need.

I've heard good things about Rogue RSS Profits and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it except that I'm afraid it will end up like BadASS RSS and leave me more confused than ever.

Can anyone help?

I've googled it left, right and center. They all the same thing... "it's so easy", blah, blah, blah... "Just use our simple tool"...

and then they leave you completely clueless!

Like I said, I've figured out advanced html, css and much more but RSS defeats me. They can't even agree on what it means. How about this: Really Stupid S***

HI David,

Instead of me typing an response again (been doing so for 6 years), check out my post on this thread:
RSS Don't make me laugh - Why Oh Why Oh Why would I RSS

However, I wouldn't call it "stupid" or "s***".

Kurt, you're probably going to be exasperated. I read your reply and watched the videos in the thread link you sent. Thanks very much. It helps... some.

But it doesn't answer my most basic questions. What do I do with it? How do I create an RSS file that will help my site?

The latest thing that got me going on this is an SEO guide I bought. It tells me to create an xml file including every page in my website as items, upload it and link to it with an RSS icon at the bottom of my index page.

What's this for? I've already got that... it's called a sitemap!

I go to other sites promising "easy" RSS creation. They ask me for content and links from my site, assuming I know what I'm doing. What content do I put in? Where's it going and who's going to read it?

Obviously I'm missing something crucial here. This many people can't be wrong about how useful this stuff is. What's the missing link?

I disagree. I gave a number of uses for RSS on the other thread. I explained that a blog will generate an RSS pheed for you, and that you can submit and ping your RSS pheed.

I also explained how it can be used to repurpose your own content and that it can be used to create a linking strategy for your own network of sites.

Instead of starting over on this thread, I suggest you post on the thread I linked to. Part of the problem is the converstation is spread over too many threads and some of us get tired of retyping the same thing over and over.
