The truth is, I just can't find enough evidence to conclusively name one CMS a comprehensive winner. I think that both systems are good for certain purposes and this thought seem to be reiterated every time before planning a site design.

Rather, we should take all the above factors into consideration (particularly the available extensions in relation to the purpose of the website) before I can make a decision that whether the site will be done in WordPress or Joomla --

Whichever CMS you decide to use, you are going to need to spend a bit of time learning the ins and outs of the system, especially if you're going to attempt developing it yourself. Yes, WordPress is a little more intuitive than Joomla, but the "complexity" of Joomla allows it to be a much more versatile system.

The fact is it comes down to personal preference. It's a subjective decision and this is the reason why the WordPress v Joomla debate will continue. Decide which system suits your purpose and go for it.

Have not experienced Joomla, but know those who have and they all went back to Wordpress. I like the versatility of it - themes, plugins, ability to change the code, etc. Has always worked well.

I've never even heard of Joomla...I prefer Wordpress.

That being said, I would recommend tumblr for those that are new to IM, and/or blogging in general. I even prefer tumblr to FB, twitter, etc.

It depends entirely on what the purpose of the site is. Joomla is generally overkill for something Wordpress can do, and Wordpress doesn't have nearly the power and functionality of Joomla.

What I prefer for my site(s) and what you need for your site(s) - may be very different... don't you think?

Furthermore, very few IMers have in-depth experience with both CMS, so their answers are, practically, based on what they happen to use. Which in most cases has never been decided based on testing, comparison etc. but by following the herd > WP!

In other words: question like the OP are completely useless

I agree with this. I converted over to Wordpress from Joomla.

Joomla was the cool thing from 2007-2010. But during that time, they upgraded so many things and became so much more complicated and offered so many features the average person didn't need.

In the meanwhile Wordpress really REALLY matured and developed all sorts of awesome themes and functionality that it could pretty serve as any site you could imagine, even a membership/ecommerce site (which was one of its weak-points many years back).

Wordpress is reigning king and what I would recommend you to use, ESPECIALLY if you're a beginner. This way you'll have tons of people and helpful guides to follow.

Both will give you what you need for the most part. My recommendation is: Choose one and learn to use it.

What I have found is that once you get used to one system it is not easy to switch.

I am used to joomla, and even when I do have some wp blogs, I catch myself complaining about it every time I go to the back end.

WP users probably suffer the same going to Joomla.

Well, obviously Wordpress isn't suited to be a search engine (Google, Baidu), an auction site (Ebay), an enormous shopping portal (Amaon), an online portal (Yahoo), a social network (Facebook, Twitter) so no, some of the world's top sites are not managed with Wordpress, although Wordpress.com is ranked 22 in top sites on Alexa.

It's also interesting to see that our findings are not far off compared to what Technorati found in its State of the Blogosphere 2011 report. In it, Technorati found that 51% of blogs in the world use WordPress. WordPress completely dominates top 100 blogs

Understand all that. No issues at all.

I just think whats popular has absolutely no weight when talking about what can provide a sustainable, profitable business that gives the owner a good lifestyle.

Popular things come and go all of the time.

I prefer a custom solution when doing something that is other than a blog or a brochure style site.

The problem with custom built solutions is that if you have a bad development team, your stuck. It costs more money, more bugs, waaay more time... but, if its done right you will have yourself a very, very unique website unlike any other that can give users real value.

Its like having a row of cafes down the street and you as a consumer have to choose where you go and eat a muffin and drink a coffee. Well lets say out of the ten, 9 of them are similar, they have different color combinations in their design, different staff, some even offer different food, but they are all similar...

then at the end you have a cafe that stands out, its got great live music, cool looking art on the walls, their menu is very extravagant with garden grown blue berries in the muffins, organic brown flour used in the pancakes , the coffee is roasted Somalian stuff, their staff are funny, attractive and nice, they have a large indoor and outdoor area with big cushions, booths, they have the works and the prices are the same... where do you go?

The OP asked what we prefer to use. I think we need to consider the background of the question... prefer to use how? Like on a daily basis as part of our work, as part of design, user interface, CMS.. or... as part pf building a great business?

It's nothing personal, but I just think WP is not a good solution for everything and I even think blogger, tumblr and typepad are all catching up, if not slowly over taking.

Like I know I like to use blogger for blogging and it has made massive changes in the wave of design and seo capablities.

Im currently building a classifieds website and its been custom built from scratch. The amount of things we can do are endless, we looked at WP as a potential solution in the beginning and soon realized it lacked virtually every single specification we required and the ones we found in terms of scripts and plugins for the back end or even small stuff for the UI we found everything would just constantly crash and wouldn't work well together. We virtually needed to customize every single aspect of WP for it it work on a minor level and still it would not do everything we wanted.

Absolutely. It all depends on what you want to do with a site whether or not Wordpress will be the best choice.

For most IM type activities Wordpress is more than enough. Ecommerce used to be the exception to this but over the last few years there have been some great plugins that make setting up an ecommerce store fairly pain-free.

Many of us started off using WP because it was easy to learn when we were starting out, didn't cost anything and it did everything we wanted it to. And having an active, highly passionate community is a HUGE factor.

But if anyone knows Joomla well and has any opinions on when/how it might be more useful than WP then I would love to know.

              Thanks,

Joomla is great for granular memberships sites, custom content with K2, that sort of stuff. It used to be more but all the premium Wordpress themes and plugins have caught up!

WordPress is simple, you can see it as a blog or as a regular website. It has fixed pages, posts and categories. Through the use of plugins you can extend its functionality and let it grow as big and complicated as you want.

Joomla’s strength is in its complexity. Deep level navigation, sections in sections, categories etc… It has fixed pages and posts, great for community sites. You can create a regular site with it but it might be an overkill.

I have created video training for both WordPress and Joomla, so of course I have extensively tested out both platforms. The answer is that I use WordPress for my IM sites and blogs. I use good old fashioned html and Dreamweaver for my main sales site. Joomla can be a great platform, but you really need to know how to do php programming to use it successfully. WordPress is just plain easy, and with so many plugins available there is no real need to learn programming.

I tried Joomla for a while but its learning curve was fairly steep. It reminded me of trying to work with the Magento shopping cart: some things were really easy to do, but then other things which should have been easy were nightmarish.

Everything I needed Wordpress to do seemed easy and intuitive. I latched onto it, and now I even know how to develop for it (albeit I'm not an expert, but I've made plugins for myself).

If you do go with Wordpress, I highly suggest the book "Digging Into Wordpress". I bought the print version which comes with the e-version and lifetime free updates to the eBook.

It answers nearly any question I have and it helped me to get comfortable with developing for it. In addition to that book, I really like the products from the guys at StudioPress are amazing. I use most of their products (except Scribe because I'm subscription fee averse) which help extend WP into just about anything you could need. Hope this helps :-).

I like Joomla but it is not easy to learn to make great looking sites with. There's somewhat of a steep learning curve. I built several really nice Joomla sites to sell and they sold but support was a nightmare because the people who bought knew nothing about Joomla.

So Wordpress comes out way on top in ease of use and there's so many great themes, you can do anything you want to do with it. I would never want to have to sell another Joomla site.

In my opinion Wordpress trumps Joomla solely on the basis of SEO. WP has adequate seo functions built in, but with Joomla it requires another layer of plugins with consequent support and updating that it makes me cringe.

I think Joomla is actually more intuitive, but the developers don't understand that we need an "out of the box" cms that WP effectively is.

If you are thinking to choose one of them, then you must acknowledge your requirements. You must understand if you want it for blogging, extensive websites with lots of features, a small site with few pages, large community site or multilevel categories. The Dashboard of WordPress will allow you to start writing right away by clicking the new post option and give you some functions within that writing screen to add things like categories on the fly. While in Joomla, the control panel can be very strange and confusing for someone who is uses the system like WordPress. This is because of the fact that there are various functions in Joomla.
