Suddenly Search Engine Traffic Drop

Hi,

Last week I changed two of my WP sites' themes and edited the content a bit because with the the new theme I had to use two descs, one for the 40 words max excerpt, and one for the article. The traffic went up 70%-80% every day for 2-3 days after I was finish, but then it suddenly dropped 50% every day and one of my sites have now gone from 500-600 unique visitors per day down to 100... 95% of the traffic comes from Google.

What the heck have I done wrong?

Yeah I hope too. But the strage thing is that I don't get the few hits from the other search engines (Yahoo, Ask, Bing) as I used to get either.

Right I am taking a punt and its a big punt....

But I think its a content related issues....

Your site although looks nice... it also looks like a thin affiliate site.... This is what I think is the issue...

All the products only have a few words on them and I am taking a punt they are just scraped...

I would be looking at adding better product descriptions and generally trying to add some content to enhance the user experience...

Only a few of them have a short excerpt only. The rest of them have a 40 word excerpt + a 150-300 word product description. (If you click on the titles, you'll be taken to the post's page. If you click on the product image or the "Check it Out" button you'll be taken directly to the products page.)

I also use to nofollow all affiliate link but I keep the linkjuice from outbound non-affiliate links. So it's not the amount of affiliate links that's the problem either...

      But thanks.

Don't have any advice to offer, but I liked your site. What's the WP theme you are using?

It has no name. It's a custom made theme and not for sale Even if you offer me $5,000 I won't sell it :p

My guess is too many affiliate links and not enough content. Probably a Panda issue. I'm not an SEO genius, but I steer clear from pages with nothing but affiliate links such as your home page.

I don't believe search engines don't like affiliate links, but there must be some value-add to the page. I used to use pages with lists of affiliate links, but now what I do with comparison charts, etc. is link to full page descriptions, helpful articles, buying guides, etc. where I have one to three affiliate links embedded with value-added content.

You're right. Google don't like affiliate links and find sites that's filled with affiliate links "spammy". But you can solve this by nofollowing the affiliate links and only keep the link juice from outbound non-affiliate links, which I have done. So it's not that what's causing it.

And I have content. But it varies. Some product descriptions are on 40 words only, while others are on 300 words and some of them are even on 1,500 words. All with original content.

I dont actually think "no following" links is the answer...

I like the site looks very nice but, but the question you need to ask is does it add value :-)

As others have said, you're probably simply experiencing a Google Dance. I would wait a couple of days (or weeks) until the dust settles.

I'm sure the google dance is part of it, but you also have to remember who Google's customers are: the searchers.

Nofollowing the links only prevents one if the many problems Google has. Another problem Google has to solve is returning high quality results for their customers (which is why anyone uses Google).

Unfortunately, spammers have made it hard to differentiate an honest affiliate site from a spam site full of affiliate links. Remember, Google is smart but it will be hard to differentiate a site filled with spammy click bank links from an honest site full of affiliate links.

You have to spoon feed google with signals that you are a legit site that is offering VALUE to their customers. That is done through good content, honest reviews and links to other reputable sites.

What I like to do is take all of the link URLs and headers from an article and paste them into notepad. If I can't tell what the content is about from that, there is no way google can tell.

All in all, my suggestion is to wait for the google dance to end, if you aren't happy, then google is probably misinterpreting your site, and you'll have to start feeding google better signals.
