Sell What You Would Want to Buy

Many years ago Allen published a story on the forum that made an impact on me and my life. The gist of the story was for us to sell what we would want to buy, treat others like we would want to be treated, write what we would want to read, etc.

Does your get rich quick ebook really help people get rich? Would you recommend it to your daughter who just went through a nasty divorce and has no money but needs to get something going quickly?

Could you use your how to make money ebook and avoid becoming homeless yourself?

Does your improve your health (condition) package really help people improve their health (condition)? Would you recommend it to your grandmother who was dying or suffering from the things your book or video supposedly cures?

I could continue to list many products and many similar questions but won't. The point is don't sell stuff that doesn't work and that you wouldn't use yourself. Yes I know the old argument that you aren't your customer but you, perhaps, should be.

Violating this basic principle of being a decent human being and treating others with respect and how we'd want to be treated is why we see the threads about how to make money (because the poster is broke) while advertising big claims in his or her signature file.

Yes give enough umph to your sales letter to get them interested - but don't lie if you don't like to be lied to (or at all).

Yes control your time and limit your free support if necessary - but don't ignore people or give them a legitimate way to contact you if you don't like to be ignored.

Yes use curiosity responsibly to sell the upsell or volume two but don't trick people if you don't like to be tricked (or at all).

Yes give $x value for $x (at a bare minimum) but make sure that you are really giving $x value and that it is really helpful if you don't like to feel cheated yourself.

Doing the right thing may not make you rich, and some here don't care about doing the right thing because they feel we are here to talk about making money not ethics, but doing the wrong thing will always catch up to you in one way or the other.

Your thoughts?

Mark

I have read a book by Charlie Munger where he made a similar point. He said "never sell what you wouldn't buy". I couldn't agree more. If you don't love what you are selling, if you don't see why you should buy the thing you are selling, if you don't think you need what you are selling then don't sell it at all.

I read it as more of a integrity check so that you can live on without guilt of someone buying some useless thing from you just so you can earn some extra bucks and live off his pain. Nice quote

Absolutely agree. Great post. I'd prefer to have a conscience that I can live with than tons of money. I know many people here are focused only on the moola but I think there are also some here who "kill it" providing honest valuable products. Most of the people I buy products from probably fall into that category.

Unfortunately I totally disagree here. I agree with you emotionally that doing the right thing is the correct way to approach things and doing the wrong thing obviously isn't but there's more to it than that.

I can think easily of a lot of people that have and still do over hype, promote affiliate products to their lists day and night without having seen most of these products, deliberately mislead people in their sales copy and plenty of other stuff. Yet they still keep raking it in day after day as they have the big JV's etc.

The same applies to the offline world, look at bankers who can't stop doing the wrong thing from the top down and they get paid fortunes in salary and bonuses despite breaking the law, manipulating LIBOR rates, PPI mis selling etc.

I wish your OP was true but unfortunately as the world currently is, it just isn't.

  • I think this strategy works because the things or products that you want to buy are usually the ones that have true value. If you're selling something just for the money and you think what you're selling is crap, isn't that something your customers would eventually pick up on?

Awesome, I live by this. It all goes back to the golden rule, treat others as you want to be treated.

Which is why I treat all of my subscribers, clients, partners and students better than gold. The better you treat people and the more you help them the farther and faster you'll go.

If you want the REALLY BIG money you almost have to resort to trickery and manipulation: Wall Street, high finance, politics, etc. Really, that fractional reserve banking is QUITE a way to roll in the dough!

Like others though I prefer to be able to go to Heaven when I die, and not the 33rd level of IM hell.

As a matter of fact, when you're honest people can tell, and they like you! Being liked and making money is good!
