Common Sense, sometimes, isn't as common as it should be

It’s amazing, but sometimes, common sense is a wealth of information. I was chatting with TheMentalist a day ago about what he thought about certain industries and niches. I have 16 years of on-line marketing experience, and I’m proud to say I learn something new every day. The thing that caught my attention with TheMentalist is when he said, “It's better to go after the clients who want to buy rather than you having to sell them.”

This isn’t profound, but it really made me think about a few things. Over the last few months my company has sold various services in the on-line marketing field. It’s been a bit of a struggle the last year, and I think this simple quote might have been a reason why.

Don’t sell your clients; go after the ones who want to purchase your service/product.

It’s amazing how something so commonsensical; so basic… can be so right. I invested 10 hours today with my team and threw this statement out there. We came up with some great ideas, just because of that one sentence. Great ideas, start with small beginnings.

100% true . We will continue to learn new things every single day. Thanks for sharing this kind of info, it motivates me to work hard and continue to test all the ideas I have one by one!

Why would you sell your clients.
A business is mainly based on the clients
. If there are no clients than the business is gone. Simple like that. That sentence took me 30 secs to think it . No hard feelings.

imfusa, I didn't elaborate on that enough. I meant to say: Don't sell to prospective clients. Go after people who already are looking to purchase what you have to offer.

It is a marketing concept that is taught in all formal institutes of education. Nothing new about it..

..you have, quote "16 years of on-line marketing experience" and are just now learning this?

Have you or any of your team been to college or business classes?

Sorry if I sound pessimistic about your comments, but a person who claims to have 6 years experience in online marketing (and you misspelled on-line) and claims to have a team that also just learned a basic marketing 101 concept just screams.. are you serious?

the lesson behind that is to focus more attention on the clients you already have. stop finding and finding more clients. the clients you have now will be the one to spread the word about how good you are to them and how best your product is.

judging from some of the conversations I have on a daily basis common sense flys right out the window.

I think part of the reason I am so successful is becasue I apply common sense. I'm no smarter than anyone else, I have an 8th grade education and probably a ow IQ, but you can go pretty far with common sense.

So true, and common sense indeed ain't common for everyone. Tapping into a hungry market will make you more income, than trying real hard to sell your products to people who aren't interested with what you are offering. It's a desperate measure. :p

Whenever some people start talking about common sense I immediately feel this ground swell of unease.

In my life I have met so many people with different experiences, education levels, cultural backgrounds and knowledge bases that I have found very few things to be universally known or understood.

When making broad statements about ‘common sense’ people seem to think that just because they know something, that everyone knows it too. People seem to forget about the diversity of society.

It reminds me of one of my favourite Einstein quotes:

‘Common sense is really just an accumulation of prejudices, which are up to 18 Year of life gained.’
