Just take a look at your raw visitor stat files and you will see it.

At least I saw it when I checked the last time (maybe a couple years ago).

Lol I know how to check, I watch my referrer in Google Analytics - I just never thought about how some people would fake that to get webmasters to view their website.

      Via http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Referer_spoofing:
Several software tools exist to facilitate referer spoofing in web browsers. Some are extensions to popular browsers such as Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer, which may provide facilities to customise and manage referrer URLs for each website the user visits.
Other tools include proxy servers, to which an individual configures their browser to send all HTTP requests. The proxy then forwards different headers to the intended website, usually removing or modifying the referer header. Such proxies may also present privacy issues for users, as they may log the user's activity.
This is the opposite of white hat.

I keep seeing Russian sites in my stats and when I check them out I never see a backlink. This explains why.

It was commonly used to exploit web stat packages that publicly displayed a list of the latest visitors: giving a free backlink.

What the video seems to be is people looking at ways to pump up their youtube views from curiousity - but Youtube can detect it - so other people are now using it to knock out competition.
