When you are drawing up plans for a new marketing project, do you develop your plan based on what you saw other leaders in the industry do? Or do you try to come up with something more unique?

I have often been taught now to try to reinvent the wheel, but rather to make a better wheel.

Slightly I use to develop my plans according to the leaders plans. But, I do try my best plans to be a good leader and follow.

I'm afraid I don't follow the leaders. When I was, I never made any money and was just another name on their list. I don't believe in offering people false hope just to get a sale, I would rather be honest and tell it as it is. After all, It is like learning any skill, You don't see people teaching electrics telling people they can be the best electrician in the world and can get the best jobs if they do their course. I like to teach my skills as an industry standard and it's up to the person how they move forward with what I show them. Some will and most won't because they are too conditioned by the system.

My focus has been on finding what works well in the market, then tweaking it a little bit and adding something unique.

This way you don't have to 'reinvent the wheel' but you aren't just lost in the shuffle either.

Frankly, I don't follow those so-called "IM" gurus anymore. I'm tired. And you know what, when you do what you love most, the money will follow you, even if you don't want it!

For products, I develop things I personally want or need to take my own business forward. These are usually exactly what other people want and need too, so it works out well.

For marketing, I stick with the tried and true basics. Everything that worked well 10 years ago still works very well today. I'm not big on fads, trends and bandwagons because (for me at least) they tend to be time suckers and big distractions.

I pay attention to some "leaders" as well as relative unknowns once in awhile, because I sometimes get reminders of the basics and I sometimes come across new ways of looking at things that I like.
