I'm thinking what is I created a website with a pretty general domain but made it span many different niches. Would I use sub domains. Is such a site a good idea ?

Please listen up. Separate your niches into different websites, each one with a different domain name. Do not cross link your web pages. Google might decide to crush one of your web sites and you lose only one. It is like you should not put all your eggs into one basket or you risk losing all your eggs. Google can get nasty and crush a site for no reason.

    Typical non reasons
    1) Too much commercial intent - that is right for selling items on your own site.
    2) Balck hat- competitors can accuse you of this one.
    3) Affiliate site - they do not like affs
    4) Controversial material - like "HATE" speech which can mean any thing to any one.
    5) Oh my favorite one - poor quality score.

This is great advice, I had a niche website and right after I sold it Google crashed the rankings :s. Split them up!!
