Yandex Just Passed Bing to Become 4th Largest Global Search Engine.

Now we have to take into account the Yandex search engine.
How can I increase the traffic from Yandex?

Publish a Russian version of your website?

(I know some Yandex searchers will be English speakers, too ... am just making the point that a lot presumably aren't, also? ).

      I don't speak Russian, but you're right!
      I'll think about it.
      Thanks.

Translate your contents to russian. But it's far from Google algorithm i'm afraid. Try it yourself.

Wow I find that fascinating for some reason lol.
That is pretty embarrassing for Microsoft though after all their efforts to catch up with Google's dominance in terms of market share, they can't even keep third place in the charts.

By the way do you have a link to prove this is now the case?
    Thanks

Thanks for that, wow that's an interesting change for sure. I can't work out though if this is Microsoft really failing badly or Yandex taking over or both of course.

In any event this will seriously concern Microsoft especially with all their efforts to challenge Google and then all they can do is slip further down the pile. As they now own Yahoo as well, it will be well worth watching what will happen to their market share over the coming months or if this was just limited to Bing.

          This is amazing...

          But, its a tough market.

First : lots of fraudulent cyber activity in the Eastern Europe.
Second: Regular users just aren't too minded to buy stuff from the Internet yet...

maybe in 5 to 10 years...

Well, Yandex is working not only with the Russian market. It's a leader in several countries. As I know, they work in Turkey too.
By the way, they have the recommendations for webmasters, you can read it with google translate. Seems that they deliver rather similar ideas compared to Google although you cannot understand it clearly through machine translation.

Yandex may be bigger than Bing "globally", but in the United States, Bing is #2 and Yandex is not in the top 5.

Being that Yandex is for people who speak Russian, that might be the best way to get ranked in their search engine. :p

What's the population of Russia? It has to be at least around the same as the US, wouldn't ya think? If the people there are becoming as computerized as the English first language world, there's no reason they wouldn't have a leading SE.

When starting to consider translation - if you don't speak the language well, you really need to know that you can trust your translator to be excellent in both your and their language. History has shown that poor translation can cause some hilarious and unfortunate ad campaigns.

Consider the American company that tried to sell their car in a country where the car's name meant "doesn't run" (The Nova). (that turned out to be correct enough to actually lend truth to the advertising)

Consider what happened when Coca Cola company tried to tell a country that spoke a Mandarin dialect that "coke adds life" and inadvertently told them that "coke will bring your ancestors back from the dead".

As different countries become computerized to the point we are, they will develop their own search engines that will do pretty well on the charts. Just be careful when you start messing with translation when trying to position your own products on them.

Well, no, but thanks for playing.
      snopes.com: Nova Don't Go

They had no problems selling their car. Spanish people aren't stupid.
They know the difference between "No va" (do not go) and "Nova," which isn't a word in spanish.

Have you ever read snopes disclaimer?

I was around when that went on. I'm not sure the foible effected sales -- but it DID embarrass the execs at the time, no matter what research snopes was able to come up with. I LIVED in the Motor City when this went on - we knew what was going on with GM. My grandfather had a senior position Pontiac and he had a very huge laugh over it at the time.

The official history, of course, makes no mention of the incidence - so how did snopes know if it happened or not by pointing people to the history? A company is not going to record those kinds of advertising pr foibles in their company history - get a grip.

Also - snopes has a very interesting, and nonrepresentational, view of ethnolinguistics.

People - scopes is NOT an authority. If you would read their disclaimer you would realize the people you are quoting as authorities - aren't.

Now - I will say the Coke advertising foible MAY be a legend.........however if someone did a straight translation, that would be a very possible incident - and is actually used (or was when I was in college) in linguistic classes to illustrate the faulty nature of straight translations.

I'm sure the guy from Coca Cola received a big bonus, after translation.

This seems to be an English version of Yandex: Yandex (I like the look and feel of it)

Added: haha... I did 6 searches for KWs from one of my niches and on the 6th search my IP was blocked for automated queries. They definitely have really sensitive SPAM protection going on there.

You dont need translate to Russian.
All the social metrics that Google has been placing so much emphasis on lately came from them copying Yandex.
I have many english pages on first page of Yandex, some of which were deindexed by Google after panda.
Get better ranking on yandex, more social signals and more country Tld domain backlinks.

I like Yandex. My pages place very well on Yandex. It's the best SE, IMO. I am not saying the most popular one, but the best and the most popular are not identical things.

I think that's a little gem still to be discovered by the public and a real competition to Google.

Well, that is not very surprising. As we can see, the first rank search engine who can compete with Google is Baidu, which is a Chinese language based search engine. And the second is yahoo, which is the eternal competitor for Google. And oh, look, who is the largest growing nation after Chinese, It is Russia!

One thing for sure, if you want to sell your product to Russian, hire someone native and let them translate your web, blog, squeeze page, etc.
