How The Karate Kid ruined IM and thus, the modern world

"Every adult I know--or at least the ones who are depressed--continually suffers from something like sticker shock (that is, when you go shopping for something for the first time and are shocked to find it costs way, way more than you thought). Only it's with effort. It's Effort Shock.

"We have a vague idea in our head of the `price' of certain accomplishments, how difficult it should be to get a degree, or succeed at a job, or stay in shape, or raise a kid, or build a house. And that vague idea is almost always catastrophically wrong.

"Accomplishing worthwhile things isn't just a little harder than people think; it's 10 or 20 times harder. Like losing weight. You make yourself miserable for six months and find yourself down a whopping four pounds. Let yourself go at a single all-you-can-eat buffet and you've gained it all back…

"How have we gotten to adulthood and failed to realize this? Why would our expectations of the world be so off? I blame the montages. Five breezy minutes, from sucking at karate to being great at karate, from morbid obesity to trim, from geeky girl to prom queen, from terrible garage band to awesome rock band."

  • I think it's programed into people all over the world from school to TV that everything is easy, they are entitled, they shouldn't risk, or leverage, to hate selling etc... All this ads up. Now the same person want to start an IM business they are in shock. It's tons to overcome. Some people deal wtiht his easy and have no problem, but they are 1%.

Well, how about... how things really are are not as easy or as hard as people think things to be?

Are you trying to tell me Karate Kid didn't learn Karate by the end of the movie? Blasphemy! You take that back right now!

Every movie with a training montage where the main character suddenly gets good at something in 3 minutes is guilty of this.

People want to believe that they could do the same thing if they wanted to. And just the thought that they could is good enough for most people.

But if they ever actually try they realize they might not actually be able to do it, or it'll take a ton more work.

I think people would rather think that they can do something but never do it, then to try it and fail. It's like a comforting thought in the back of your head. If you never actually try you can keep telling yourself that it's possible.

I love the Karate Kid movies but you're right, they're not very realistic at all. That's why if I need real motivation I watch movies like "The Pursuit of Happiness" and "Rudy". Those movies show the struggle, sacrifice, pain, and all the crap the main characters had to go through to achieve their dreams.

Edit: I should clarify, I'm referring to "The Pursuit of Happyness" with a Y, the one with Will Smith. I guess "Pursuit of Happiness" is a totally different movie. I'm sure most people on here have seen that movie anyway and know what I'm talking about lol.

As a Karate Kid fan, this has got to be one of the most intriguing titles I have seen so far on WF ... Interesting read by the way.

That seems to happen a lot, how the person says "No one told me how hard this was going to be."

Chances are many people wouldn't start something if they knew just how hard it was going to be.
