How do you know you're Maximising your Conversions?

Question is essentially in the title. How do you're maximising your conversions?

How do you track your conversions?
Do you know what traffic converts?
How do you track your opt in rate?
How do you know which ad-copy works best?
Do you know which sales funnel is best? Opt in->Free book->upsell or Sales page->sale?
What tools do you use to monitor and test your business?

All answers appreciated

Woaaah that's a lot of questions Russell!

    1) I use a web analytics software just like Piwik or Google Analytics. If 150 persons view my site this day and 20 of them buy (random numbers) I just have to do CR = sales/views * 100 = 20/150 * 100 = 13,33%.

    2) I use a different webpage for each source of traffic (solo ads, WF, email). Then do the same math I did in #1 for each page.

    3) My autoresponder software does this automatically. It says how much impressions of my opt-in form was made and how many subscribed.

    4) Again, you set up different pages with different copy and measure the results

    5) See #1

    There you go buddy!

      1) Analytics does this for you. Make sure you have your site set up as an e-commerce store (under profile), there's a small bit of code to insert and now you can view your per visit value, e-commerce conversion rate etc.

It sounds like a split test is in order. Many autoresponder services now offer this, or you could always use Google Website Optimizer.

But the bottom line is that at the end of the day, nothing is more important than conversions (Sales and actions) when it comes to your business. A topic this critical to success is worthy of the time it takes to test and learn first hand what works best for you - You'll hear plenty of opinions, and many of them good ones at that. But at teh end of the day, they are still opinion - Not fact.

There are many variables unique to your situation that could influence the outcome - Meaning real world testing will trump opinions any day of the week.
