HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU GIVE A WEBSITE/VENTURE BEFORE YOU QUIT?

I have a website that just hit its 1 year anniversary. It gets about 120 uniques/day.
I'm revamping the whole website, converting from HTML to wordpress, adding member log in, newsletter signup, new features, experimenting with ads etc...

So far I have spent $1600 on webdesign, and im going to spend a little more to get it updated with new content. I am actually having fun doing this and i feel that in another 1-2 years time I could have quite a successful site.

Am i being too optimistic? How much time would you put into something you feel can really make it big? WHEN WOULD YOU QUIT??

If you're having fun with it, there's really no reason you should quit, unless it becomes a major time/money sink.

I say keep at it. You're getting steady traffic, and it sounds like your site is ready to be monetized as well.

    Good luck!

I have one PPC ad up in my header for the past 8 months, that brought me a total of $26 so far. But i really was not expecting anything from it at all as im concentrating on content/ideas that should pay off in the long term.

I think we all have those occasional days where we look at what were doing and ask ourselves questions like this, its nice to have support from others once in a while. Thanks

Is it making any money for you?

I personally think that you need to keep your eye on the prize - just because it's fun doesn't mean you should be doing it!

The fact that you're already getting a bit of traffic indicates to me that it is worthwhile continuing with.

Was your old site that bad that you expect the new graphics and revamp will make a massive difference?

Of the customers that visit, how many reach your goals? Are you doing any testing with your pages at all, to see if that help?

The reason that I say testing, is then you could pitch the old site against the new one, and have confirmation of which is best...

The reasons why i feel like im enjoying myself is because it is in a niche that im very familiar with, and because i feel like im building something and as slow as it may seem im watching it progress.

Why im re-designing: The original site was 4 static pages, interesting content, but it pretty much ends there. With the new design i will have user log in, newsletter, members chat, modern look. I think it will build a mini community around the subject and build interaction/hype. Im already on facebook/twitter/pinterest.
Most of my google traffic is coming from 2 keywords, so i also want to build a page that will target long tail.

is there a typo here: you spent $1,600 in web design?

My question is what does making it big mean?

are you getting a return on your investment? How much more are you paying to keep your website updated?

Your mindset has to be you will never quit... As long as you are making a return on your investment you are on the right path...

As long as it fun for you and you are continuing to grow, success will always follow

      ALOHHA,

By making it big i ment generating enough income to live off.

I spent $1600 for the site to be designed 1 year ago, if i had known about Odesk 1 year ago i would have probably only spent about half that.

But that brings up a good point, how am i suppose to judge if I should continue investing in this website? It hasn't come close to paying itself off in the 1 year that it's been live but it's definitely growing. I think it could possibly be growing at a rate in which it could possibly pay itself off and more in the future.

It hasn't been an immediate success, but i see a lot of possibilities in it.

Most business don't start generating a profit until a few years in, no? Some stocks might only pay off years down the road...

      what do you think?

The project I am working on now, I have committed myself to not even entertain the idea of quitting or changing until I have made at least $1,000,000 or more.

I may add to the arsenal, but quitting is never entertained in my mind!

Sounds like you have a winner along with a winning attitude. As you said on those days where you aren't having as much fun or it is a ruff day to get through for whatever reason, you have places like this with positive people to interact with to give you that boost of motivation to continue!

        Keep it pushin sir!

Watch your stats. As long as you are getting traffic then work on monetizing that traffic. If the traffic dries up then that is the time to move onto a different site. Personally I like having a few sites going, you spread out the risk that way.
