Windows movie maker is capable of doing lots of things, perhaps you need to look for a tutorial to create the effect you're going after? Do you have an example of a video on YouTube that you're trying to duplicate?

What you are looking to do is pretty basic, even though I don't use Windows Movie Maker I'm almost sure it should be able to do it just as any other basic video editing software.
Having said that I use Vegas to edit and you can do what you want and a lot more things.

Insert images to videos? with movie maker, that does sound difficult if you already have a clip and you want to insert something into that video. I'm not a pro with movie maker so I don't how that can be possible. How about searching for free stuffs online like adobe CS5. There's a lot of stuffs like AFTER EFFECTS, ON LOCATION, etc. You can edit your videos, add effects and etc.

I use Adobe Premiere and Corel Videostudio.

    Neither are free.

VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows platforms (98/ME/NT4/2000/XP/Vista/7), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

ActivePresenter could do this as well as Microsoft Movie Maker. Both are fairly good in their own free ways.

    This is your lucky day!

    Lightworks

Lightworks is an Open Source video editor for Windows that has many of the features of commercial products like Sony Vegas or Final Cut Pro (the latter is a Mac product and is what I use). Don't let the free aspect fool you, actual commercial movies have been made with this product.

It's free and there is also a Pro version.
