Affiliate managers: What's the "Top 5" Skills/Qualifications List? And, warning signs?

As I expand my business, I'm on the lookout for working with various affiliate managers, either to help me run my promotions and/or when I'm working with other companies' affiliate managers....
What are the "Must Have" Qualifications you'd say are essential that an affiliate manager must have, to be successful? The "job requirements" so to speak.
obviously the better connected in your industry, with a positive reputation, they already are, the better... but what else? And, any warning signs on who to avoid?

(p.s. I'm in the trading industry; so bonus points if anything specific to that... but mainly, "What makes for a successful affiliate manager?" and how to check references/determine they're good?)
