I'm pretty new to IM.

Started 4 months ago with DCSX.
At first I was following the course's daily lessons.

Then I started solo ads to build my list.
Got up to 120ish that I kind of killed with tons of emails trying to make quick $$$ out of it. Didn't know better back then. Was promoting the offers I thought would bring me more $$$....Didn't really think about quality

When I saw my list growing I thought to myself "I'm fine now, I can put DCSX on the side, I will be making money soon"....couldn't be further from the truth!

Tried more solo ads with different products and squeeze pages and got my list up to 335 subs (as of today)

In my 4 months I didn't make much. I made 2 OTO sales and 3 $1 trial sale with DCSX (hopefully they'll stay after the trial and I'll see some monthly income from it!)

So, now I'm starting to understand a bit more the whole thing (!).....

- Got to build my list
- Got to know my list and take care of them
- Got to provide value and not just sale sale sale!

I'm saying that I'm overwhelmed 'cause I just have so many things that I need to do everyday.

All my subs are spread over 4 lists. One is a 42 days email sequence the rest I write the emails daily. (taking me a long time but getting better at it)
I got back following the DCSX program so I try to do a lesson a day.
I started ARM. It is very powerful but very demanding (which I don't mind 'cause I know it will help me so much)
I work on my website everyday (sep, product review, etc..)

On a good day I can spend 5 hours on IM...some other days barely 2 hours
I've got 2 kids and a wife that I got to take care of and I need to work to feed them.

Can't wait to see some good money come in but I know it can take long.
I've been told, "this isn't a sprint, it's a marathon!"

This is my story in a nutshell!....kind of a messy nutshell though!...
Sorry for being all over the place but I just wrote it as it came!

I though maybe if I write it in here it might resonates with others starting in IM or with successful marketers that have been through the same and could share some insights about it.

By the way....if the form of the sentences and stuff isn't perfect, I'm sorry!
English isn't my first language....I'm from Montreal and I speak french.

You are truly right with the quotes above. You forgot that you'll have to improve the conversion because you can earn more and build your list faster if you can convert well especially when using solo ads. Better think of your OTO wisely because it's one of the most profitable when building your list and also the autoresponder email series.

Welcome to the club and yes it aint as easy as they made it sound on the sales page or in the sales ad is it? Or a better phrase would be: Welcome to reality out here in the real world.

No need to lose heart or get discouraged though. You are better than most. You put in some real work and actually followed directions although it looks like you may have been a little too eager and decided to speed things up by creating your own little shortcuts.

No biggie no bother. We have all been there. It's no big deal. Real life just slaps you a little bit when your head is filled with the dreams from those hype filled fantasies and sales pages of instant success.

You really need to focus seriously on not only how to build a list but what to do with the list once you have built it. Email marketing broken down to it's simplest form is really relationship marketing. There are some complicated metrics, numbers and psychology involved with the details but the bottom line is that your subscribers need to look forward to your emails and not dread them like another spammer trying to dig into their pockets.

Let's keep it simple. Your list needs to do three things for you:
      (1) Know you.
      (2) Like you and
      (3) Trust you.

That's a very simple thing to say and to understand. It's not necessarily fast and easy and will not help you pay your bills this month. Unless you are willing to spend a substantial amount of money for mass marketing you will have to build that relationship with your list the old fashioned way. Let them get to know you. Provide them with an overwhelming amount of value. They will begin to trust your judgement, your words, your recommendations and whatever you have to say to them.

The next thing that happens is that they will buy your products. It is not immediate or overnight. Relationships take time to build. Once your credibility and care and concern for them has been proven and demonstrated they will eagerly listen to what you have to say because it is valuable to them and it has really helped them in some way.

Bashing them over the head with sales messages gives them no perceived value no matter how great your product is. They don't care about that. They have to buy you first before they will buy your products or recommendations.

And once again welcome to the world of online marketing. Take your time, learn, digest and experiment. You are really just another small business person. You'll be fine as long as you get the right information and follow the proper steps to get from a to b.

Perhaps instead of thinking only of what you want you should
start thinking of what your subscribers want.

        Ask yourself these questions:

        # Who are my subscribers?

        # What is really important to them?

        # Why did they join my list? What were they hoping to
        get out of it?

        # What can I give them that they will truly value?

        # What can I give them that will make them want to
open every email I send them?

        Kindest regards,
        Andrew Cavanagh

Andrew is spot on. You need to change from being product-focused to being customer-focused. Find out what they need fixing, and help them to fix it.

I know the above is easier said than done, but if you want an evergreen business, that's what you need to do. The secret to having a successful business (online or off) is to have repeat buyers. You only get repeat buyers by understanding what people really need and giving it to them.

          Cheers.

Kevin, thanks for the valuable info.

I would like to ask you a question....when you say "overwhelming amount of value" what do you mean?...E-books, tips, tricks etc...?

        Thanks again!

Value is a simple word that covers a whole lot of ground. On the internet or an email list value can "begin" with content. But it doesn't necessarily end there. It really depends on your niche and your target market. In a relationship there is also an interchange or interactivity between you and your list.

To be of value in business means to serve. You have to be of service to your subscribers. The question would then be how can you serve them? What do they want the most? What are their most pressing problems? What are some questions they may have? If you don't know who they are or how you can serve them then you can't be of any value to them. You are just another salesman spamming their email address.

So yes it could be content containing tips, tricks or what have you. It could be software recommendations or downloads to help them out. It could be the latest news story that has everyone buzzing. It could be a funny story you encountered that might be applicable to them and their situation. It could be a link to some website that may solve a problem they have been struggling with that you get no monetary gain from. You could invite them to an interactive seminar, coaching session or an informative video or audio that gives them value packed information to help them tackle some nagging problem they have been wrestling with.

This is just part of the brainstorming process or the researching process to find out who your customer or subscriber is and how you can best help them.

Are you tracking and testing everything?

This is a must, especially with solo ads. Solo ads can be hit or miss.

To me, internet marketing involves testing everything (a lot) in order to see what works best.

I am tracking but haven't done much on the testing side!...This is definitely something I have to improve on!

You're definitely in it for the right reasons! Not the one who is the "one and done" opportunity seeker.

The workload does decrease as it will for you in a short little bit. Just don't get burned out by thinking you have too many things to do everyday (and doing them). For a marathon, you really don't have to be in a hurry.

On the road, of course there are setbacks, but it's all how you react to them - and how you act!

    Good luck to you...

My man, No one here has ever claim to have reached some lofty height that doesn't require each one of us to do the basic mundane thing that keeps the wheels greased. You are in the right place. All I can say is stivk with the fundamentals. Ask questions. Be a good listener, cuz some time they won't say it twice.

Sounds like you're on the right track, just don't rush things! It definitely is a marathon. You don't want to cut corners or it'll come back to bite you in the ass. If you can just build things slowly each day you'll get there.

Treat your list well Seems like you've already learned a lot and are gonna be alright if you just keep at it.

It is not all about building a list and having a great relationship with them. It is all true but the one thing that you need to realize is that you need to have new and fresh leads every single day coming into your autor-esponder.

Plus, you can not rely on a few subscribers to buy from you. Just because you have a good relationship with them, does not mean that they will open up their credit card and buy.

A lot of your subscribers will never buy from you no matter how many offers you send them or how badly you want to help them out. There will always be the few who will buy and that is why consistent list building is a MUST.

This thread is definitely taking you down the right road which is to think more about your market, burning issues/frustrations/problems/desires and then seek out solutions that you can offer to them in a clear and useful way - that is what VALUE means.

How you go about doing this is going to depend highly on what you are good at and what you like doing.

For example, if you struggle with writing - then perhaps communicating through audio or video is easier and more effective.

You may not be a good teacher at all (or even like that role) in which case your value add is lining up other good teachers who can help solve the challenges you have identified, that approach works too.

It's not so much about having 46 follow-up emails as it is about having follow up emails that really move a prospect toward an outcome they badly desire...that's what works.

    Jeff
