Female narrator on fiverr, what do you think?

I have a few people in my office who are extremely interested in doing some female narration on fiverr. Both have great sounding voices, and would do an excellent job. I did a quick search on fiverr and I really don't see a lot of female narrators; a lot of male. Most of the ones I see have delivery dates of 5+ days, or only do 30 second narrations.

Curious... do you think the lack of female narrators is because:

(A.) Not enough people are purchasing the gigs
(B.) It doesn't bring in enough money for the narrators
(C.) Something else?

I know a female narrator on fiverr that consistently gets 15-30 gigs per day, although I know someone else who barely gets an order a week. I'm conflicted... your thoughts?

  • I am a linguist. And so I've done a little bit of this in my schooling.

It is fine, BUT she needs to speak in a lower register.

When I say that, it means that 'sounding professional' doesn't mean 'using big words' and 'sounding smart'.

Because you can be an idiot and still have great voice over.

Female voice overs do better when they have DEEPER voices.

If they have high, squeaky, shrill voices, then it turns off everyone, and people don't take them as 'professional'.

In fact, it was something that Margaret Thatcher was coached into doing prior to election and during her term. She needed to 'lower' her voice in order for England to 'take her more seriously'.

Does this include showing their faces while they're narrating? If yes, maybe it's because many females are shy and don't want other people to know that they're doing this kind of gig. I think your colleagues should post a gig on Fiverr. They won't lose anything anyway and who knows, maybe they would get lots of orders.

I don't know *why* there aren't many female narrators on fiverr, but I think a good one could do very well. There are many products and services where a female voiceover is demanded.

A lot of the successful voiceover people on fiverr have professional training in broadcasting, which makes a huge difference in the quality of their offerings. I would not bother hiring someone who sounds like an amateur, even for $5.

Good = a naturally pleasant and rich voice, good diction and expressiveness, and the proper equipment to produce a perfectly clean voiceover. And they would need an excellent voice sample.

Bad = a high, childish voice, amateurish delivery, stumbling over words, lots of noise in the voice sample.

    Hi everyone,

in my opinion female narrators are as good as male
and I would definitely hire one.

But to get more job is the case of good advertising
    and great feedback!

I wish you all the best

Really interesting conversation. I would say set up a new account dedicated to doing high quality female voice over work. Optimise the profile and listings for internal search and start promoting it externally too!

It usually takes about 1-2 months to get any serious traction on fiverr gigs so don't bin the project before then.

The only way you'll know for sure is by trying it out. I hope it works well for you

A really great question. My opinion is that there is no real issue regarding male or female in this issue. Go to this female who is successful and copy what she is doing. Just decide to do an even better job than she is. I don't think there is an issue here. Just go after it. It's eminently
out there waiting for somebody to take it. All the best.....Action, action , action.

There are a few female narrator/voiceover people advertising a service on Fiverr, but generally women who can do this competently or professionally aren't willing to work for $4, so there aren't many there.

The first thing my instructor in broadcasting class at college told us was that women were never going to do much in radio because they don't have the right tone to compliment the music correctly.

Sounds silly 30 years on now doesn't it? Generalizations such as this (which were touted as fact by some in a male dominated industry) created roadblocks for female broadcasters for decades and so, Alexa is probably closer to the truth in her assesment.
