How to build a list ?

Okay so I'm brand new to Internet marketing.. I'm only about a month or so into this.
I know a few effective strategies etc etc.
BUT
I want to know what to do, I want someone to tell me in steps. Or atleast guide me?

I'm aware of the fact that building a list is a very effective tool in terms of the profitability of a product when it comes to marketing it.
So, plain and simple - How do I make a list ( preferably low cost), I have no site, no blog. Will those be necessary?

Thanks a lot!
-Luke

Here is a simple guide that I use and recommend:

    1. Open up a GetResponse account
    2. Get your product (or affiliate offer) link ready
    3. Create a webform and have GetResponse host it for you
    4. Make your product the thankyou page
    5. Create as many daily followups as possible (30-365)
5a. Make these messages super helpful
5b. Lead back into how your product will help
5c. Tell them to click your product link
    6. Drive traffic with 50-100 click solo ads (to start off)
    7. Drive traffic with helpful YouTube videos
    8. Drive traffic with banner ads
    9. Test and tweak until your funnel is profitable
    10. Automate moving buyers to a separate list

Everything goes into more detail of course, but this is my funnel in a nutshell given to you free in a forum post.

I just started my own list building journey and have had some great success with a similar model to gjohansson1. I signed up with Aweber for my autoreponder and set up a sales funnel. Put simply, this is a simple html squeeze page offering a free guide in wrote on traffic generation. This asks for the users email which, once submitted, fires off a welcome email directing them to a thank you page containing the free download and a one time offer (sells for around $10, a conscious decision to keep it low in price).

Not only do I make money from the occasional OTO (one time offer) sale in the thank you page, but I also build great relationships with my readers, which sometimes means having one on one email conversations outside of the autoreponder. This makes them primed to buy as it gives me an insight into their needs.

To drive traffic, I use solo ads and the occasional stint on traffic exchanges.

Let me know if you need more info, I can go into more detail.

"How big" isn't the key question.

The key questions are (i) "How well targeted?", (ii) "What are your email open-rates?" and (iii) "How responsive are your subscribers?", because if you get those things right, your future is assured.

Could not agree more, so often I hear "how big is your list..." when it should be "how targeted and how qualified is your list..."

          It's not all about size

Yep, true, l have rented a solo ad for a 50k list with barely one sale and 50 people optin in, then tried it with a buyers list with one or more sales per 100 people on the list.

If the list is freely available, or cheap, Fiverr, etc then it will most likely be burned, or the owner has thrashed it with every offer he could find.

But some members here, and online have decent lists that actually make money!

Also only ask for their email only and use a single optin, that should get your conversions up by about 40%.

Or give you a 50-60% optin rate. I am currently getting a 55% optin, by offering a PLR video series, and creating a buyers list!

Money in the bank, one day!!! :p

Just type in PLR products, etc on Google and you should find some decent ones.

Avoid ones with crappy graphics, that will kill your sales, or buy one with great videos and find someone, on Elance or possibly Fiverr that can clean it up.

Then you have your product or OTO product.

But if you want to run a WSO, then you have to create your own product!

But that is another big area, best to sift through the threads and ask questions, Rome wasn't built in a day, and regardless of what you do, it will take time!

Going on Ebay and selling junk from your house is the quickest way, to get quick cash, then go from there.

IM involves a lot of "Tit-For-Tat" marketing or you find or create a hot product and find that the advertising costs are too high for it to be viable, then you build your sales funnel, etc and still can't get over advertising costs, that make sales.

Then you try this and that and eventually figure out what works and what doesn't, and start to make headway.

I have been online for more than 5 years, and am finally seeing some good results, and have tried SEO for a few years with dismal results!

SEO can work for you, but 87% can't get it to work.

So, l tend to stay with what is working for me, which is software development, and sales!

    Good luck.

The funny thing about marketing is the fact that you need to kind of do things backwards...

You need to set up the whole journey (system, funnel) for the prospect to go through, and then you send them through it...

    1. Set up a lead generation system, as Alexa Said, it doesn't HAVE to be a squeeze page, but that's what I personally use most of the time.
At this stage, you simply want to offer the prospect value in return for their contact details (I just ask for the email address).
The value can come in the form of an ebook, a course, a video, an audio, a coaching session etc.

    2. Set up a lead conversion system: To convert as many leads as you can into buyers... And separate your buyer's list, or AT LEAST make a note of who your buyers are.
At this stage, you will be offering them more value, but in exchange for payment. Your selling mechanism can be done using your coaching session, using your a video presentation, using a sales page, or even using your follow up messages... It's up to you.

    3. Set up your follow up series: These are the messages you're going to be sending to your leads (& customers)... Customers should get a different follow up series.
You use your follow up series for positioning, and lead conversion (where needed): As in showing that you ARE an expert, and that you have something of VALUE to offer. You cold even just use your follow ups to send them to existing pieces of content that you put out there, such as youtube vids, and blog posts. But the ultimate goal is to make a sale.

There's no need to "hard sell" all of the time. Just show them that you have what they want, and then tell them what you want in return.

    4. Drive (targeted) traffic. Find people who are likely to be interested in what you have to offer, and send them to stage 1 of your funnel.

    Simples =).

    1. get a free or paid auto responder ( I prefer aweber - they are just excellent!)
    2. Create a squeeze page. Basically a 1 page website where you offer a free eBook or video in exchange for the person's email address.
    3. From there when people sign up they will be added to your list - where you will start to send them valuable information on a weekly basis.

Also I would like to add keep it simple. It has been proven that when you give your visitors too many choices when they appear on your website - they will do NOTHING.

It since you main goal is creating your email list - squeeze page is your best option, they can either sign up or leave

Pretty much covered it here. But I would just ad that you have to offer something of real value - PLR stuff is great, but if you can make your own stuff that is even better. Have a look around the forums and try to find an answer to peoples problems, then start sending traffic to your offer. This can be free traffic or paid - paid will get your quicker results but it can be costly!

    Hope this helps.

Some of the people that replied to this thread have suggested doing multiple things to get traffic...

Solo ads... Youtube videos... Banners... Etc etc etc.

Don't spread yourself too thin. That's a very common mistake. Pick one traffic method and have the tunnel vision to master that one particular thing.

Once you have it down (and by having it down I mean actually making significant money from the source), move on to the next one.

One trait I've noticed most of the guys that make it in this game is their ability to focus, focus, focus.

    For newbies,
Please run affiliate links to your solo ads.
Do run your own products at this early stage. Trust me, your product is not going to convert well.
You need time and experience to razor-sharp your salespage.
You need to have some money in to cover your marketing cost. Choose carefully your affiliate product. This is the most important yet understated process.
