I recently became active on twitter. I'm trying to figure out a way to monetize it without spamming. Please advise.

The basic formula is: create some interesting posts without selling anything, follow people who have the same interests, hope they follow you back so you start creating a following, create your link to your non-sales page (blog, for example) that then has all the links to your revenue site. Always deliver something of interest. The more interesting you are, the more click throughs to your other pages you will get. This is a very basic answer, and you can surely expand on this using some advanced tools/ideas, but I think this is pretty much the concept.

Depends on what you are trying to sell really. The path is different for service vs affiliate or product sales.

Start by following key players in your niche and watching who they interact with. Work your way into the conversation.

I'm trying to get thousands of followers before I start monetizing it. I like the potential, though.

the idea is to drive traffic to a blog / affiliate link instead of trying to sell things directly through twitter

It is really about creating the relationships and having a balance between promotion, providing value and conversation. Once you have developed the relationships your followers will definitely support you by re-tweeting your posts. Use keyword searches to discover people who are discussing the areas you are most interested in and follow them. And I would also suggest you follow back everyone that follows you. Have fun!

    Hi Iamnotherenow:

Hope it was a good week. Many people have different views on what they do with their Twitter account.

Let me give you the safe way because in the end you could find the results better. It is always tempting to plug everything you represent because it costs nothing to post on Twitter but....

Try to have only 1 post out of 10 as a plug for something that would make you money. Build trust with the followers by providing quality content on the other 9 Tweets. Join in conversation to show you are interested and not there as a robotic salesperson.

Look to follow and get followed by people in your niche but don't close the door on those that may have different interests if your product can be beneficial. For example if you sell an Internet Marketing Download that doesn't mean a sports fan can't enjoy it. However your first line of business is to get those in the niche.

Look around for those that have big followers and quality content. Follow them and also look at who else they follow and who is following them.

Don't rush. It doesn't matter if your neighbor has 1900 followers and you 1899. I hear so often about competition even among friends. Go with quality.

Good luck and enjoy the weekend.

      HA! That's funny.

I'm monetizing Twitter by managing offline clients' Twitter accounts. It's profitable!

    Vahid.

Why wouldn't you just drive them to your site with your sales page and portfolio...You are losing potential visitors to your site and money by doing it the way you are doing it, IMO anyway.

I think a great way of getting clickthroughs is to converse with your followers on a regular basis. Don't overdo it by replying to every last tweet but be sure to answer a few questions a day and such. Recently a follower asked me to reduce my profile image's size because it was causing his computer to crash whenever he loaded it. I took a few days, changed it, and then asked him if the new size was suitable. It's the small things like that which will have your followers grow slightly fond of you and will definitely lead to an increase in clickthroughs.
