RSS = Really Simple Syndication.

I have several times had articles published in various directories, then submitted the RSS feed into a site such as Feedburner, only to find my article pop up on the first or 2nd page of Google through one of the RSS sites.

You can use sites like Feedburner, Feedage, and Feedest.

There is also a great program you can purchase called RSSBot that submits to just about every RSS feed site there is. I bought the program for $7 about 6 months ago and I love it.

Make sure you are feeding your articles into social sites, as well.

I have a very good piece of software you might wanna look into using:
RSS Feed Directories Tool - RSS Announcer Software

Also, has been stated, Feedburner is a good
addition to submitting your feed... Feedburner
has many ways to display your feed!

Looking at their site -Im not seeing it jump out at me.

I want to use RSS for backlinking strategies

Like I said, "Feedburner has many ways to *display* your feed!" on your webpages etc...

That is basically what Feedburner does, although they may
have added some other stuff... haven't been there in a while.

I consider them absolutely essential! They are easily integrated into your CMS so that they update automatically, but the bang is submitting your feed(s) to MANY MANY MANY rss directories. Before my computer was stolen a couple months back I estimated that I made an average $40 extra per day just from feed traffic. And to be honest I really dident do anything beyond submitting the feed to a list of RSS directorories.

RSS is really something to fully consider, but first you must find ways to integrate it into your website so that you dont have to manually update it yourself.

It's just that there is a whole mass of people whom don't really "surf" to find information, and get it all from feeds. That is a way to reach these types and expand your reach.

It seems that financial sites do very well thru syndication of feeds, since the audience tends to be more analytical, and likes their info in one convenient place.

Feedburner is great for "dressing up" your feed, monetizing it thru Adsense, and the viral tools they provide such as email subscription capability, pinging, and bookmarking addins. Like a one stop shop for syndication.

Feeds are just another site promotion strategy, but well worth the effort long term.
