Is Splash Page a Good IM Tool?

Is the use of a splash page limited to traffic exchanges only? It can be heartening to know that splash pages are hosted too and hence they would rank on Google. In such a case can we promote the URLs of our splash pages with a view to get them higher in their Google rankings? What is your opinion about splash page as an IM tool?

You can use something like: Welcome Gate (free).

They're effective on some sites and won't affect your rankings....

I thought I could promote splash pages on blogs and external websites to push conversion rates.

That's interesting- I actually had no idea you could skip the Welcome Gate thing until I watched the video on their site.
I've left a couple of different websites who use this, simply because the "Skip this step" button was not visible enough (I didn't notice it).

If you're using this, what percentage of your visitors leave right away?
    I'm curious...

I've also left a few websites when I've seen this.

I suppose with anything like this, you can decide for yourself only by careful split-testing (though it's not something I'll be testing, since I wouldn't be willing to use it anyway), but they must drive away a lot of visitors, you'd think?

That was a good comment! Yes, my click-through rate was pretty poor too!

I just starting using it on one site so it's too early to tell.... but the visitor isn't always 'forced' to go to this page:

        From their site:

        "Here’s how a Welcome Gate works . . .

        1. When someone goes to your home page, they’re redirected to a squeeze page that looks like this. (the page is at a url like http://www.YourSite.com/WelcomeGate/).
        2. Your Welcome Gate has a “skip this step” link, so folks aren’t required to opt-in.
        3. Folks are only redirected to a Welcome Gate when they go to your home page (i.e. if someone links to a specific blog post on your site — from twitter or their blog — your Welcome Gate won’t display).
        4. If someone goes to http://www.yoursite.com, they’ll be redirected to your Welcome Gate at http://www.yoursite.com/welcomegate/ . . . but if they get confused and type in your home page URL, they’ll simply be taken to your home page.
        5. A visitor will only see your Welcome Gate once in their lifetime (unless they go to your site again with another computer or browser, or clear their cookies . . . the chances of this are very high)"

Ive heard their are squeeze pages that give you the option to opt in or just go straight through to the site. This may be an option for you.
