How do you manage affiliate link status

Hello All

Like most affiliate marketers here I have a growing list of products that I am promoting on several websites.

How do you mange the status of these links

What I mean is if a product is discontinued or the link changes how do you keep up.

As of now I am only promoting a handful of products, but as my amazon review site grows and my other niche sites grow the amount of products keeps growing and I want to be sure they are all active.

Is there software or some other method to keep track of this

By always being in control of all your own affiliate links (for example using a redirected domain-name, something like PrettyLink, or whatever). You surely wouldn't want your (non-redirected) affiliate links on any pages you don't yourself own and control? That would be very hazardous ... :p

I don't use PrettyLink because it's for Wordpress (which I don't use). There are simple HTML equivalents you can use, though. I just keep a list of them as a word-processor document on my computer (and backed up), but I'm always in control of them myself, and can't be left with a non-functioning link on someone else's site.

I use some software that creates links but I still have to check them manually. Even from within the software it can be a pain because they only list so many links on a page even though they can be accessed as a list of clickable links the navigation (going from page to page because you may be on page 4 but each time it directs to page 1 and you have to go back to page 4 to continue) wears me out so I don't do it that way. I just create a single HTML web page and list all my links on it and keep it in a folder on my computer, then open it in my browser and go down the list.

You never know what you may find. Websites or products gone. A product owner no longer sells his product, never told his affiliates and has turned his site into a redirect site to another persons product he promotes and cookies the visitor with his affiliate ID, or they let the domain expire, someone else bought it and it now redirects to a porn site or something malicious, etc. Always wise to regularly check your links. Goes with the territory.
