Wordpress - how to show only excerpt of post on front page

I'm certain this must be possible and I just cannot find the proper setting in Wordpress. I would like the posts that appear on my front page to only be the first XXX number of characters of my blog post. To read the entire blog post, the visitor would need to click the link to go to the post page.

I know I can do this in Joomla, so all the posts/articles on the front page are a uniform size (same number of characters shown) and then there is a link to 'read more.'

Can anyone guide me on how I do it in Wordpress?

    HI Susan,

    In the writing area, you have the option to insert a "page break" (INSERT MORE TAG) line that inserts a "Press Here to Continue..." type of text at the post summary, bottom.

    I wouldn't be surprise if there is a plugin that allows xxx words before it truncates the post and allows you to see the complete page with a click.

    I've setup that way and it works fine.

      Check out this plugin:

      Homepage Excerpts Wordpress Plugin

      It basically allows you to set how many posts you want to display fully on your main page.

      The rest of the posts it just leaves an excerpt and then a click here to read more.

      I think it helps out a lot with people leaving comments since they have to stare at your comment box when they are on the blog posts actual page.
