Hi all,

I am creating a site which showcases other peoples videos on youtube. The videos would be embed on to the site and I would put them in neat categories so users can easily find videos that they are interested in.

Do you guys have any ideas on how I can monetize the site besides adsense?

Any suggestions would be great appreciated. Thanks!

if you're going to be doing a site involving youtube videos, i would suggest not using adsense at all. start with amazon products or affiliate programs. as soon as you begin getting traffic, begin offering spots to advertiser on your site that you can auto banner rotate using openx

  • Lumlum,

I agree with clubapple. Your best bet here is going to build up traffic to the site and then either place affiliate links in content or sell space to advertisers. I think if the site was useful enough people would like it however you have to ask yourself, how is your site going to be any different than just going to youtube and watching the videos. I think once you figure that out you may be on to something.

Perhaps you can find some inspiration here,

    Doesn't YouTube already do that?

      Hi Guys,

Thank you for your suggestions. I am new at this, so when you guys place affiliate links, are you talking about adding links into the videos on the site?

Or do you mean place affiliate links / banners throughout the site?

I can't put links on the video because I am simply handpicking videos from youtube and I do not own the content. The site goal is to organize videos so that users can easily find what they are looking for.

Would you guys be able to elaborate a bit more for me? Thanks in advance.

You would use banners and ads on the site, not right on the videos. You can put links in the video descriptions.

Adsense pays pennies per click where a banner or other ad platform may pay more.

In addition, it is against YouTube ToS to create a web site that is a collection of embedded YT videos used only for traffic to commercial or adsense sites.

To draw people to your site rather than have them go straight to YouTube, make it a very focused niche site.

Collecting all the videos you can featuring "Badgers Wearing Hats" would draw people to your site who don't want to troll the YouTube search for every little Badger video.

The bold section says you can't have a big video collection site populated only by embedded YouTube content and monetized with advertising.

You can use YouTube a part of the content but you need other content "of sufficient value" that it is the basis of sales, not purely YouTube content.

Thanks Onsubie, this is really good information.

To your point: I would curate and hand pick youtube videos which I find interesting and not just randomly add videos to the site. I would also create blogs articles to the site and have contest for users to vote for the top videos and give out prizes.

Ultimately I would also create a community forum for enthusiast so they can provide ideas, suggestion, comments on our niche.

      Would this be ok? Thanks.

My site would be similar to v i r a l v i d e o s.com but I would include more blog post and then add a community to the site. Besides adsense ads and banners, is there any other way to monetize this type of site? Thanks!

Your idea sounds fine. There are many sites that seem to violate Google/YT ToS but seem to get away with it. Maybe they are flying under the radar. Maybe it is just a matter of time.

Your idea of building a community around other content as well as YT seems like it would be okay.

I bet a lot of sites that may be in violation could be left alone until they started making real money and/or became a problem for YouTube.

I know your just starting out...

When I first started trying to make money online I thought of the same thing. I started a site that was all YT video. It was something that I found people was really searching for on YT. So first I built 2 test sites using auto content from YT where my site would grab videos from YT automatically, which didn't really give me control.

Then I created my main site. I started hand picking videos, creating categories, and adding banners. I started using many keywords and putting keywords on each video. I then started tweaking the site how it looked and eventually created a new version of the site that looked hella beautiful...

      You know what happened?

I wasted months on working on this site and not able to get traffic to it to monetize it. So the site is still going, but no income made from it.

      --------------

I would suggest if you are going to get YT videos. Make sure you hand-pick the videos, Create a very narrow niche (example: Cute dog videos), and add other information on the site besides videos...

Add valuable content to your site. helpful stuff, that would make people want to go to your site versus YT.

Making a great site is cool, but not getting eyes to it sucks... Pick a niche you have passion for and stick with that niche and create a world around it with your site.

    Here's My suggestion,

If you want get videos off YT. There videos out there for every niche or trend and so on. You know you can contact those video owners and ask them to place a Affiliate link/Own site URL In return you pay a very small amount $.

A lot of these videos will have millions of views, which is excellent, The person who's video it is, you can offer them a small charge $10-20 or ask them, don't go over. However you can contact X amount of video owners and do this method

Imagine you have videos with Millions of views and viewers are seeing your LINKS,
Also these shown or embedded on your site.

This is a strategy many use, whether you do this for your site or generally.
