Looking to setup a site, the word is related to the niche im looking to go into. The main extensions such as .com, net and org are taken but the .co however is available.
I personally love the look of the .co domains but are they really worth buying. Are there any disadvantages to buying a .co, any help would be appreciated.

Direct linking to the site will not be a problem, although, anyone who remembers your url will most likely type .com

I would say no. As already stated...people will remember .com and go there...even tho they're trying to get to your site.

.co isn't a normal top level domain that people even think about.

    I wouldn't waste my money.

Now, if the .com is available, but you love the .co - then I'd get both, and you can redirect people from the .com to the .co; however, with the .com already taken - I wouldn't mess with it.

    Thanks for the help.

Are you 100% dead-set on the domain name? If it's an EMD, it doesn't matter. EMD's took a pretty major hit recently. So there's not really a lot of value in using one.

I'd personally prefer a .com, .net, or even .info.

Great domain for the niche, short, looks/sounds good.

Guess there is only one way to find out so ill just give it ago, hopefully things go in my favor.

Other than what others have already said about losing traffic to the .com, you would be better off coming up with a unique name and getting the .com. I never bought into the next big extension B.S the registrars put out there. I never bother anything outside .com/net/org

I still have one .co but I was put off when I mistakenly typed .com instead of .co several times to get to my own domain. It's habit and people will do it and you'll lose traffic.

When that happens, you know it's time to get a .com name
