Sometimes if you talk to the person that created the ebook and tell them your situation they will give you a free review copy or an overview of what it taught in their product. Of course you can just buy it and if it sucks you can ask clickbank for a refund.

  Eric, go to Google and see if you can find any honest reviews of the product,
  which I'll admit is not going to be easy to do.
  
  I remember seeing the product a while ago. If I remember correctly, it shows
  you how to get jobs as a game tester.
  
  Without knowing what's in the product, I'm going to take some guesses as
  to what is in it because I have some experience with the industry. My friend
  Leonard Herman wrote a book, "Phoenix...The Rise And Fall Of Video Games"
  and he knows all there is to know about this industry.
  
  Most likely, the book will tell you to go to the top game maker sites and
  forums and see if you can get a gig doing this. Because there is so much
  competition in this area, it's tough. You may have to start out for no pay.
  
  As you get a rep as a top notch tester, you can start getting paying gigs.
  
  As a former QA tester, I can tell you that this is a tough industry to crack
  and more likely than not, people getting this book, looking for a quick push
  button way to get a game tester gig, are going to be disappointed. It
  isn't that easy.
  
  Bottom line: Ask for a review copy and then judge for yourself if you think
  the advice inside is legit.
  
  If you can't get a review copy, buy it, read it, if it sucks, refund it.
  
  Those are really your only options.

  Man, I don't know exactly what angle the ebook writer is suggesting but...
  
  I worked as a QA Tester at Electronic Arts in Orlando for about a year. Know what the pay was? 8 bucks an hour. Granted there was a lot of overtime when crunch time came but the base, hourly rate was 8 bucks an hour.
  
  I did it and was happy just because I'm a bit of a game geek. It was fun and a great environment to work... But I can tell you that game QA is just not a place where companies pay a ton of money for your services.
  
  That being said. Maybe this guy knows an angle I don't know about. But being surrounded by a bunch of guys who did this for 10 hours a day you would think that it would have come up.

Eric, the best bet is to go to the search engines and see what you find and I suggest that you do as Steven suggested and ask for a review copy and see what you think of the book once you read it - its best to become familiar with what you advertise toy our list - because when you do it blind sighted it may hurt you in the end....

Bottom line - get to know what your selling.

You could ask for a copy or you can buy it and check it out for yourself.

IMHO "markets/lists/etc" appreciate an honest review from someone who has actually tried something they are recommending.

When you are in your teens or early 20s making $150 a day
playing video games seems like a dream job.

I've knows people who worked as software testers. It's not
so bad but I never got the impression it was a fun job because
of the playthings... if it was fun it was because the people
in the office were cool.

I doubt it's a scam... but you gotta realize that it's probably a
little tough for a slacker to go out and ferret out such a job
and then get through the interview process... after all it's not
like playing video games is a job skill that the general public views
as having any real value.

Stilll - video games are big business and they do need people to
play with them at many stages of development in order to find
bugs. It doesn't sound like a dream job to me at all but to some
people sitting on their asses all day playing computer games is
nirvana and they'd be happy to be paid to do it.

You should really just go ahead and buy it - it's the only way you can really provide an honest review and recommendation (and hold on to your credibility). If it's not good you can just get a refund.

I worked in the game industry for 8 years. I actually had my own wireless gaming company, made cellphone games and sold them thru the carriers. I didn't have my own testers but worked with many companies who did. Being a tester in the game industry might be fun for a bit if you are young and have no other education, but most testers got bored pretty quickly. And yes the pay is not that great. Even for programmers, the hours are long, the pressure is intense and the pay is less than you could get in other industries.

I did pretty well for several years but that's only because I had my own company and played by my own rules.

This is not considered "game testing", but there are plenty of people making a ton of money leveling up characters and collecting items and money in the different online games. The side business that comes from the different MMOs is huge. Easily into the Billions.

As an actual game designer, I can tell you that being a game tester is not a scam but it is an entry level position in the video game industry. I think the claims in the ad are a bit overstated to be honest but it's definitely a viable career option if you want to break into the business. In the company I worked for we had a few game testers eventually become associate game designers.

The interesting thing about this is I am almost positive that the guy who has the site now is not the original owner. I saw a listing on sitepoint.com that fits this exact description a while ago. Hmmm.... don't know if it has any bearing on credibility, tho...
