My point is, that craigslist attack on shippers is pushing, who would be honest shippers to have to lie. Its not fair either way.

Since you do have a personal experience with this you should kind of let your emotions lie dormant because right now I'm just planning stages.

No matter how you dress this up - you are trying to justify your actions to break the rules of the CL marketplace because they don't benefit YOU!

There are other marketplaces to sell in - find them and do your business ethically! And posting this kind of thread here doesn't do much to build your reputation here either.

You say that you haven't lied on CL yet - and technically, that's true - BUT you have violated the ad code by implying that you were a local seller and now you are trying to figure out how to dig out of the hole you are in - so you haven't really been totally honest have you?

I would suggest that you find another way to sell your iphones - I cannot imagine that anyone would be comfortable sending $1000 bucks once they find out the terms anyway!

I have a feeling that you are going to do what you want anyway - but I think you may be surprised at how few prospects actually take you up on your offer.

No, my point is that if you do it, even thinking of doing it, puts you in the same class as other people who lie to make money.

I hope you don't.

My best advice...

Be honest about the whole shipping thing. If you think it's scammers who have ruined it, then say so. Honesty is the best policy, if you have to lie, then you're in the wrong game.

If you choose to lie, that's you. Don't BS yourself and pretend that someone else "made you do it."

I wouldn't lie and also I've seen enough people have that catch up with them to know that even if you make the sale in the short term, you will get what you deserve soon enough.

That's exactly why I said, IF.

And we do get very touchy about lying, for the same reason you get upset about scammers on Craigslist. It's not the right thing to do, and it makes it harder for honest people and non-scammers.

Nobody is casting you out like a leper - if that was the case, we'd tell you to go away and then ignore you. Believe it or not, we're trying to help you do the right thing, and run a better (more profitable) business in the long run.

Okay. I am going to choose to take the point of view that you really are trying to find ways to legitimately make money and are resorting to the possibility of using dishonest tactics out of desperation.

Here is my advice:

1. Change your mindset. The universe is not out to cheat you, scr*w you, or keep you poor. Read positive books. Read books and blogs about mindset. I recommend The Magic of Thinking Big (can't think of the author right off the top of my head) and also anything written by Zig Ziglar. I am sure others can suggest different books and authors.

2. Take responsibility for your actions. No one makes you do anything. Your situation is the direct result of all of the choices you have made up until this point. Your future depends on your choices from now on. Make better choices. Which brings us to....

3. Make the conscious decision to stay completely honest in all you do. Period.

4. Be open to advice from others who are successful. If someone who is making money gives you advice, listen. Don't argue about why it won't work - because it does.

5. Focus. Quit chasing every shiny bauble that sparkles. Focus on one method to make money for now.

6. Read. Ask questions. Take action. This forum is a wealth of information. Use it. Be teachable.

I think this is a great post. My first response also was to get pissed off and I started writing an immediate reply.

However, I thought if I do that how is it going to help him? And it is not.

Part of the problem is the lying but the bigger problem is that the only choice he felt he had included lying.

It just shows how inexperienced in sales and marketing he is.

So the question then becomes how can we teach him to have choice?

My mistake. But that doesn't diminish the fact that you still joke :confused: you're going to have a WSO with the script (Shane's script I'm guessing). You may lose a lot of these potential buyers because you implied here that the Iphones are coming from out of State where you're at. But in the other thread you started, you said drop shipping. (I'm assuming that means overseas.) I know I wouldn't buy from anyone who is drop shipping an Iphone on CL. Yes, scammers have ruined it for you but you set yourself up for it by posting out of the area. Maybe you should go back to eBay & use your feedback to build your trust. People would feel much more comfortable buying thru eBay knowing their is less of a chance of getting scammed.

I'm guessing its a picture of an Iphone, after all he doesn't promise it to be a working real iphone, that's just some detail stuff that doesn't really matter LOL

Its sad really to find someone with so little self worth.

It is wrong to lie. How would you like it if everyone of those "buyers" decided to "lie" to you, and didn't really have the money to pay for the iphones, so once you shipped them, discovered all the funds were charged back? Would you think it was "ok", because they were lying just like you?

here's a novel suggestion... why not tell them the truth ? That you advertised when you were not local but are willing to ship the items to them when paid. If they will not trust you then you can blame yourself for posting in other cites than your own. You knew going in that most Craigslisters who buy do so BECAUSE it is local. Just tell them honestly that you have the item but you are not in their city and it will be shipped when they pay you and that they can always get a refund via Paypal if they are not satisfied. Everybody wins.
In the future don't post in cities other than your own of be willing to drive.

It would appear to me, that many internet marketers lie to make the sale, not quite different from the Used Car salesman!

The reason many Internet marketers lie is because what they sell doesn't work!

So the only way to get your money is to lie. Or if they told the truth (like you WON'T make $15,000 in 14 days - it'll take you 9 months to get over the learning curve) no one would want to buy. The hype of "get rich quick" is all over the Internet (& biz opp mags offline) so people have grown used to the "instant" lottery mentality.

Many IMers promote lying (their affiliates do it to make the sale, lies are built into the affiliate tools) & so many justify it to make a buck.

What would you think of me? It's not the fact I would actually do it, but the premise that it really does show how my mind works.

Like I am trying to toss out an idea and see if the other person runs with it, KWIM?

I have the feeling that if people had jumped in after the OP saying, "Man! That's a great idea! Lie like a dog and make the sale!" you would be singing a different tune.

That's just my opinion, but I believe that money should be gotten the hard and moral way, including working smart of cos, which speeds up the progress considerably. :p

If you lie, you are just adding onto the fraudulent scams in the Internet. You know how it hurts to be scammed, so why do it to someone else?

This is my point, people have been scammed so much that you have to lie to get their trust. Craigslist has taken advantage of this by taking over the local dealings niche and just flat out calling everything else scams. I mean that is terribly smart and I that is why craigslist has grown so fast and large. It will one day be bigger than ebay. But what is that going to do the the global trade?
But there is a big difference between the scammers who have no items and try to sell and me, because I have items to ship, but I get put into the same category as the real scammers. How about just telling the people the truth.

Something like

I want to thank you for your interest in my product. Before you pay for it though I want to make sure you understand something first.

To benefit both you and I, I want you to know that I am out of state. Now, I realize that there have been people who in the past have been burned when buying something out of their state. And that those other people's dishonesty is costing honest business people like myself real customers.

So I feel it is best to let my customers know upfront what they can expect from me.

Blah, blah, blah, you get the idea.

Basically you want to point out the obvious which is that people in the past have been decieved/scammed, and how that hurts honest business people. Then you want to seperate yourself from those other people.

Then to show that you are honest you can tell them that they can either buy from you still on craigslist, or they can go and buy from you on Ebay if they feel more comfortable.

Then once you done that you leave the choice up to them.

Sure you might lose some sales but it is better to lose some sale then to lose your integrity by lying.

Let us know what you decide.
