What payment processor allows me to sell a $0.00 product (with no trial)?

I want to sell a product for free i.e. one-time $0.00 with no trial. Just plain free.

The only reason I need a payment processor is to collect buyer leads with credit cards/Paypal so there's some commitment there, and it's not just a free download.

What payment processor can I use? I've tried PayDotCom and WSO Pro but they don't allow it...

I think you will find it very hard to convince people you are giving them something for free and then turn around and ask for their credit card information. It won't make sense to them.

If you absolutely want some committment on their part you are much better off putting a small fee in place. It makes a lot more sense and will look a lot less shady.

I agree, people will think something fishy is going on. If it's free then there is no need for C.C info. If you want to target buyers with C.C, then charge them a small fee or trial.

    Exactly what Will said.

I wouldn't want anything from someone saying "Hey, I'm going to give you this for free! Just give me your credit card information..."

See what's wrong with that? Either sell it for a price, or make them sign up for your list.

If the product is free, there is nothing to sell. You're giving it away. The only thing you can capture is their contact details. But that's all you need if you're planning to sell them stuff in future.

Getting someones credit card details in advance is not a commitment that they will use it with you in the future. I doubt anybody would part with their payment details for something free, as it sounds somewhat scammy.

Can you not see the contradiction in terms, in what you've said above, Mark?

If you tell me that it's "just plain free", why would I be willing to give you my credit-card information?

I think you can perhaps do what you want by charging $1 for it? That way, you'll build a buyers' list of people known to have either a credit-card or a PayPal account and the ability and willingness to use it online? That's what you want to achieve, isn't it?

Sell if for 0.01$ or skip the payment processor and capture a double opt-in first with your auto responder.

I'm with the crowd - I don't trust random people with my credit card information. I especially don't trust people who tell me that something is free with my credit card information!

This looks more like a scam than anything else. I appreciate that all you want to do is qualify your prospects - but it looks like a scam!

    Hope that helps

you'd be better off to charge a dollar for it, I can imagine people being very confused and hesitant. Then in all reality they wouldn't really be a buyer lead if you were giving them something for free.

People who sign up for something free won't be likely to want to give you payment information. I know I wouldn't. Got burned doing that once and won't ever do it again. All you should collect is an email address, which is done easily enough with an autoresponder.

Why not do a 0.01 trial or something instead as someone suggested?

I would never sign up and give my payment info for a 0.00 product, seems too fishy. At least with a 0.01 trial or w/e, the buyer knows whats up and what your intentions are.

I am sure one of the stockphoto websites offer a free trial where you had to enter your payment details so that your subscription started at the end of the trial.

Naturally you could then opt out before the end of the trial period.

Question: Why would you need people's payment details if you are offering something for free? Surely the opt is enough to create your list.
