IP country locator

Hello warriors,

For one of my sites, I need...

1) An accurate IP country locator to know where there country my users log-in from. That means an IP databases that are regularly updated, even if that means that I have to pay a monthly fee for constant updates.

2) Moreover, I need the IP locator to recognize when the user tries to log-in via an anonymous proxy in order to bypass the IP-locator system.

Can anyone recommend any reliable service, regardless of whether it's free or paid?

    We just signed up for this service to locate country by IP address. We use their PHP class which is simplicity itself to set up and works like a dream.

      "Anonymous" by Definition is exactly that: "Anonymous" /AKA no sod knows.

      People use Anonymous Proxies for a reason, they don't want to be traced.

      People like a-hole Russian Spammzers/Hackers/Warez distributors/distribution etc..etc..

      That's why they are so hard to nail..they use Anonymous Proxies.

      Or you could just be looking for a trigger to tell you they used one. I'd even doubt that's possible.

      But as far as identifying a user, that's impossible. Almost.
      That's Correct you will be able to trace there IP Address but only back to the Anonymous Proxie server

    maxmind cityDB does it all and it's for free. they have a paid version as well which is a bit more accurate, but IMO it is not necessary if you're not using anti fraud.

      I second that. MaxMind's database is very comprehensive and it's free. So you just need a small script that would check the person's IP against the IP ranges in the database.

      I've used it for a couple of projects and it's great.

    1. Use statcounter
    2. In some cases, an anonymous proxy (transparent) hides just some information regarding visitors and allow recording the IP address.
    In case of high anonymity proxy you can't record the IP address.

    As far as I know, it is the only database that has postal code targeting for over 150 countries, based on actual anonymous user supplied information combined with Internet infrastructure mapping technology.
