Outsourcing! - Becoming a way of life...

Outsourcing seems to be becoming a way of life for many SEO freelancers and also some big players in the SEO game. I am seeing this more and more everyday. I have been doing SEO for some stent now, probably right around the days HTML was developed, or even prior to that in my college days. I can remember sneaking into colleges just to use their computer to place ads and staring at a black screen with semi green letters. I have come a long way since then.

As a freelance SEO artist. I find it is best to do all the technical ends and onsite optimization myself. Tuning in the site for its phrases that I am going to rank. Always shooting for that #1 position, and fighting to keep it there for my clients. But as is, I try to set it in stone. So, finding a good company to outsource to to take care of the boring backlinks, social bookmarking, classified ads, and more can be a task in its own. And finding someone whether it may be in India or the Philippines so I can still make a profit is absolutely frustrating. I find myself nagging them on there mistakes and making them correct their errors a lot more often and time consuming than doing it myself. But through the years of outsourcing the dirty work, I have come across the excellent, and the ones who will get you penalized. Just spamming your site with bad backlinks and buying spun articles and so on. So you must be careful. I particularly have found the few who I use time and time again. It was of course not easy at first. I would write them , give specific instructions, and as usual, FUBAR, due to the lack of Enlglish. But after a little patience and training, they got it down.

To make a long story short, many of us are outsourcing, even the top companies who charge you 2k + per month for SEO. I see it every day. My client says to me "what is going on? we are still in the number 3 position and this new site just passed us" I say wait and watch. As we hold the number 2 and 3 position, the companies who by pass us quickly, don't last long in the number one spot. And these are big players in the SEO game getting there clients site penalized or so forth, what the action may be. I give thumbs up to one particular company in India, who truly understands SEO, and they avoid all Panda and Penguin attacks. KUDOS!!!! SO, be wary of who you outsource to. and be careful, remember, the one on the sales end of the person you are looking to outsource your work to, is usually not the one doing the work for you.

I think many people think of outsourcing as something that you only do so that you can get it done cheaper, but I am happy to outsource work to someone who charges the same to me as I do to my clients, just so that it frees up my time to do other things and makes me more productive.

It's nice to get something outsourced for cheaper than you can get paid for it - but I think the big focus many people put on trying to outsource everything for as cheap as possible is why they often get poor results and worse work than if they did it.

I second that! We have enough resources as well as key freelancers and small teams we work with, but I am very curious as well.

Is it eBrandz by any chance?

Yes, the sales person I work with, her name is Swati. Please bear in mind she is only the sales person. She will send your work off to one of worker bees. Ushan is one of those worker bees. I had to monitor my work from them on a daily basis at first. But they got it down to a "T" You can reach Swati on Skype: (swati@black id) or at blackid.com.

Outsourcing is necessary when you grow. You can't hope to manage 100+ clients by yourself without some burn out. I'm offering a writing service right now and doing it solo, but I've already made plans to outsource to other good writers once I have enough clients.

It's part of the game. It's the same as getting employees for a brick and mortar business.

Great choice of words. I agree, it takes some extent to find a good outsourcing company. A lot of it is through trial and error. though when you do this. Hence, you put your clients in jeopardy through the trial and error run. But, at times, with work overload it is necessary. I have not had much experience in outsourcing, but would love to hear more. Any one else have any experience in outsourcing? And trying to find a good person or company? Would love to hear more on this subject. Thanks for the post.

Most people think that outsourcing is just about handing out work to someone cheaper. To some extent that is true, but to outsource your business successfully and free your time for other things, you need to have a change of mindset and you have to understand how your outsourced workers think.

If you want your business to grow, you do need to outsource. To find the right people and to keep them, you have to know how to outsource. It's the same way with brick and mortar businesses. Successful businesses often have great managers who know the business and knows how to manage and inspire employees to do more.

regarding this concept "OUTSOURCING" I really don't like or respect it! I also consider it cheating! If I was paid to do something I will do it myself and won't pay someone else to do it, and if I was too busy with orders, I will let the client know and schedule everything with him so he can have the QUALITY that he paid for.

Well, I agree with you to an extent. But it all really depends on what you are outsourcing and the type of work. As an SEO freelancer, I don't take in many projects. I only take in the projects that are worth while to the client. I am a one man team. I do not buy backlinks. Therefore, if you have 3 SEO projects or 4, or more. With 10 keyword phrases each or more. It is literally impossible not to outsource. If you have employees, well, you are outsourcing the work to them, even if they are on your team. I do all the critical work myself, all the onsite optimization. and I build a few quality links. But is that enough? of course not. You need help. And sometimes 2 heads is better than one. So, the extent I agree with you on, is if you had small single projects that you do alone. But when it comes down to your clients, and you want your clients to succeed, and you want to climb the ladder. Sometimes, if you put them on a schedule, and they need it now, well you lose that client because they seek else where. We all need help time to time. Don't you agree?

That is a REALLY limited perspective. I think you must be missing something.

You seem to be confusing outsourcing with reduced quality.

Why would you outsource work only to get it done WORSE that what you could do yourself?

I outsource precisely BECAUSE I want my clients to have the best results possible.

If someone comes to me and asks me to help them build their website - Sure, I could create their images for them, but I'd much rather just get a great graphics guy who loves it and does it with passion to do that while I help the client with their strategy.

When I wrote my last physical book - did I create the cover art myself? no way. Sure I could - but I wanted a BETTER job than I could do myself, so I outsourced it.

Outsourcing is NOT about reducing quality in order to save money.

If you would never outsource because you want to do everything yourself - that's your choice.

But don't sit on your high horse and throw the whole concept out as cheating when in fact, many people use outsourcing in order to deliver nothing but the very best for their clients.

Like I said already - there are some people who think of outsourcing as a way to make money by charging people more for something than they can pay someone else to do it for, and in that model it's quite common to have trouble getting the quality of the work at its highest, but that's the bottom of the barrel part of outsourcing and not what everyone uses it for.

We all only have 24 hours in each day - that means if you never outsource or work with others - you can only every deliver what you personally have the time to do.

As IMers, many of us like IM because it allows us to work effectively, with great leverage, and in a way customised to our preferences.

So - we don't all want to be spending 20 hours a day working, when with some careful planning and good management we can delivery way more value than we can personally create and for many more people.

If you've ever had a normal job - you think your company never outsourced anything?

Many large companies outsource their entire website management and marketing. They don't have the skills in-house but they want the results, so they pay others to take care of it for them.

I've helped many people and businesses in many ways and some of those ways I prefer not to do now and find it much better all-round if I just pay someone else to do those tasks, it's better for everyone.

I can go on and on about outsourcing. I have an extent of knowledge in doing so. It is at noe means an easy task. But once you find the right person or company, it relieves a lot of stress of the shoulders because you know someone has got your back. Sometimes, if you outsource enough, you establish good relationships and those people become a part of your team. And at the drop of the hat, if you need work done, they are there. At the point where I am now, they don't even ask me for money. I know the agreed price before the project commences, they start their work. And once I see it under way, I send the payment. There are some great people out there who want to earn a living just like you. We as freelancers, if good, charge a bundle. Don't be afraid to let go of your work sometimes, help others master there dreams also. We got where we are by skill and that one client who believed in us. Give others a chance also.

Good post, but I don't think you were doing SEO since before HTML was created considering that the first search engine didn't appear until 2 years after the initial release of HTML

Maybe I should have rephrased that. You are correct. Though HTML was first developed in the 1980's and did not become public until 1991. And then the search engine wars came along. But before search engines internet was public using NSFNET, ARPANET back in my days. So, I should have rephrased that sentence and not labeled it SEO. As i did mention mention the black screens with the green characters. The first bulletin board system (BBS) was developed during a blizzard in Chicago in 1978. Also in 1978 is also the year that brought the first unsolicited commercial email message (later known as spam). 1979 also ushered into the scene: Usenet, created by two graduate students. Usenet was an internet-based discussion system, allowing people from around the globe to converse about the same topics by posting public messages categorized by newsgroups. So there was a form of optimization back in my day.

I agree with you. Outsourcing becomes a way of life for freelancers and oursourcing company.
In my opinion, if we can find the good/right cooperators, the work can be professional and efficient. Maybe it needs a little longer time to find the good cooperator.

You do need to outsource as you grow. The key is working out WHAT you need to outsource which on the face of it looks easy, but you need to know how much return you will make.

Sometimes it is not about freeing up your time. It is about growing. There are only 24 hours in a day, and you are only one man. If you want to grow as a freelancer, or even a company, you need to outsource. Whether it is to your employees or someone overseas. How are you able to grow without outsourcing?

Outsourcing means many things to many people.

For some it is about freeing up their time.

For others it's an easy way to arbitrage skills and make a profit being the middleman.

For others it's about being able to offer more than you alone can do.

      etc. etc....

When a company hires new employees - it's not because they want to free up more time - it's usually to be able to offer more functions/services/products than they could before.

If you're a software house and people want to buy something you don't have the skills for - you can hire someone who does and then say yes to that business.

This is how business works - you think Donald Trump digs the roads and builds his own hotels?

Yea outsourcing can be a full time job in and of itself, but once you find someone you trust it can be great. Also a lot of people want to outsource because they have more MONEY coming in, not more WORK. You should only outsource in my opinion when you have an excess of work, not an excess of money.
