Best Affordable Payment Gateway?

So, I am a little confused about the whole payment gateway thing.

I understand I obviously need a payment system which customers can then use to purchase products from my website and I also need a merchant account to accept payments and have the money transferred to this account.

However, what I don't understand is which service is the best and which is the most affordable for a small UK E-commerce site?

Any advice?

    It's not just about one service. I suggest you explore each type. Paypal, Google Checkout, Credit Cards and eChecks. Give consumers the options and diversify your risk.
