Switching to Hostgator

I'm considering switching my websites to Hostgator. I like my current host but they seem to be having frequent issues lately.

I was just wondering if anyone has used their service where they say they will switch over everything for you up to 30 websites? And did it go well?

I do have about 30 websites with around 60-70% running on wordpress with the mysql databases. It just seems like it will be a real hassle to move.

      Hey Dude,

I switched all my hosting over to hostgator more
than 12 months ago and I had about 30 sites to move
      over too.

      They do it with ease...

I think all it is is a cpanel transfer or something.

You have nothing to worry about man...Its way
too easy for hostgator to do this for you.

      Regards,

      Cameron Inglis

Cpanel to cPanel transfer is pretty straight forward, not too much required by admins to do it.

        Good luck with the transfer.

Dreamhost. They actually aren't that bad but I'm sick of the hiccups. They were out this morning for only a few minutes but it was the few minutes I had to update something. I was also worried about them possibly being down longer since I have many articles being published today that could possible give me a nice surge of traffic. All the work would be down the drain if the websites aren't working.

Dreamhost doesn't use cpanel though... at least I don't think, so I don't know if it would be a huge deal.

Most places that offer xfers require Cpanel on the source end. When I was with DH, I looked at HG and, at least at the time, they would not do the xfer for me because they couldn't just do a dump of the Cpanel config and re-load it at their site. Thus, I had to manually move my sites myself by dumping DBs, etc.

It wasn't too bad though - took an afternoon. If you're really into the "only do it yourself if it's worth your hourly rate" then you can find people on forums, rentacoder, or whatever who will do the work for you also.

I've been happy with hostgator too. No problems whatsoever. Rarely do you hear complaint with them. I didn't have to have any websites switched over, so I cannot share my experience on that.

If you have 30 websites, then hostgator might be the best choice for you.

In my opinion, hostgator is one of the best hosting companies when it comes to the hosting of multiple domains

I love Hostgator ... you can't beat their customer service anywhere. Plus their prices, the unlimited domains and databases ... excellent.

I just switched to Hostgator from GoDaddy and was told by Hostgator support that the transfer would be smooth - not to worry. Problem is - I used GoDaddy propriety software to build my site so NOTHING transferred. Now am in the process of learning how to put up a site with a completely different kind of software while my site remains down. The moral to this story is NEVER use anybody's proprietary software to create your site. I was so new when I started, I was just glad that GoDaddy's sitebuilder allowed me to get my site up so quickly and easily. Now I wish I had taken the time to learn a bit more about how things work before I got involved in SEO and promotion. One woman's opinion...

I'm sorry that happened to you! That must have been bad. I do write my own pages since I'm a web designer but even I like the ease of use of wordpress so I've got those installs with the databases that makes it complicated.

Thank you to AtomicFlipper for the advice... It just sounds so complicated but I bet if I just go ahead and do it all it won't take all that long.

They may not do the transfer from DreamHost because it's not using cPanel.
I'd send them an email or give them a call about it.

They certainly wont be able to transfer from dreamhost. You will have to do it manually.

I been with hostgator for 2 years now and have had no problems ever.

I'd keep your dreamhost account open for a month or 2 longer too, while you transfer the sites.

Best way would be to get a server to server FTP client such as SmartFTP Pro and transfer the files using the queue system it has. You will need to create your addon domains and sub domains first tho.

Once you do that, create backups of your data from wordpress using the export feature under tools, and then re import using import under tools. Of course you will need to create the databases again using MySQL.

You could also use PhpMyAdmin to export an .sql file and re-import it using the same tool in cPanel with HostGator, I would do it this way as you wont have to install wordpress again, you just need to copy your files, create a database, update the config file and then import the .sql file into the new database using PhpMyAdmin.

Recreate all your email accounts, and forwarders.

    Then update your name servers.

While I have no experience switching sites over to Hostgator, I've been a customer of Hostgator for a few years and never had a problem.
