How to Make Money as Expert in Automotive Repair Industry

Hi, warrior members. Was wondering if anyone can provide some insight on the best methods of making money online for my talent. I've been involved in the automotive repair industry for 20 years. This includes service and repair to cars, motorcycles, ATV's, personal watercraft's and small engine repair.

I've written roughly 600 articles over the years for different websites. Most articles I've written get between 500 to over 10,000 views per page per year. The amount of views I get depends on how broad, narrow or popular the topic is.

So I was wondering if there is something such as starting my own website to turn a profit? More importantly, what are ways I can make a profit that will provide a return worthy of my time? I have experience selling items online but was wondering if I can turn a profit without actually selling and mailing out products e.g. AdSense, Amazon affiliate, eBay affiliate, selling ad space, etc.

With that said, I see people saying they make almost nothing using AdSense and others saying they make almost nothing on Amazon? Is anyone making good money with any of these programs? Im very good at getting on the first page of Google and in the top 5 slots for my articles... so what would you do?

Thanks for your time.

If you know what the hot topics are from the page views of your articles, you could write how-to books (or whatever) on those topics and sell them. Amazon Kindle may be an option for you. You could write a series of books on various topics. You could do a series of short 99¢ books on assorted topics and also have a compilation book at a higher price (but a better deal than buying a bunch individually). You can get up to a 30% commission on 99¢ books, but a 70% commission if your books are priced higher than $2.99 (or around that--I don't remember the exact figure). So, your 99¢ become your loss leaders and the larger compilation books are the money-makers.

You could still promote other products on your site as an Amazon affiliate and use AdSense. Just think of those as bonus income and don't rely on them as your primary income source.

If you already have name recognition from your articles, that may help you get a headstart on building traffic to your site, especially if any sites you've written for (or will write for) will include a link to your site.

I'm sure some Kindle experts will pop in with some better advice for you, but I think it's something you should probably consider, especially with the amount of page views you've gotten on your articles.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

    I agree with Dan.

Clearly you already know of what you speak and there is a market for that knowledge, otherwise you wouldn't be getting all those article views.

So you should be selling your knowledge!

Compiling it into books and guides will allow you to sell something that you don't have to ship. Plus you can write it once and sell it many, many times.

It would be cool if you could get a link to your website (the one you will build to promote and sell your books from) in those articles you have already written. (I assume they don't already link to any website since it sounds like you don't have one?)

Starting your own site will be tough to generate traffic for in the beginning.

This is why I recommend YouTube, Get a decent camera and mic and pick the topic of your choosing.

If you see you're not getting the amount of views you want, then try getting a YouTube featured ad.

Have you thought about selling a guidebook, covering topics like how to maximize your trade-in value/what dealers look for? Or, the buying side, telling people what "trouble areas" they should look for, how to spot body repairs, etc.

Then promote it "WSO style" with high-impact copy.

Put the information out as a $10 eBook that would potentially save people thousands of dollars if they read it, and focus on that benefit.

"Learn the tricks dealers use to low-ball your trade, and how to beat them at their own game"

"How dealers 'dress up' used cars to hide problems and damage. Don't buy a used car until you've read this guide!"

"Not all accident damage gets reported to CARFAX - learn how to spot repairs"

    etc...

Here's an idea. Use all of those articles you have to drive traffic to a squeeze page and offer your number one secret for free.

Build a relationship with those people, and continue to sell physical products. But without doing any of the fulfillment. Just do JV deals with automotive companies.

You'll be able to structure these deals so it's a win-win for both you and your partner, but whoever owns the list has the most leverage.

Then you can sell information products to their people as well.

Or since you're good at ranking articles and getting views, still definitely build a list. Be nice to those people who sign up. And survey them.

Ask them what they want most, and then give it to them. Repeat.

    Here's an experiment:

Talk to anyone who's building a list right now and ask them what they wished they'd done sooner. 100% of them will tell you they wish they'd started building their list sooner.

I don’t even know what Kindle is. I guessing its a download book store. Will have to see if they allow the download of videos since most people need a visual guide. Pictures and illustrations aren’t always enough.

I am able to view the analytics for one website I have a few hundred articles on. Seems most searches are looking to buy automotive parts or learn how to fix their problem.

As far as an answer and question site goes, this would be good since I do this all day long already. Plus Im a fast writer in my field.

    So far I could:

    Use Kindle... maybe
    AdSense
    Maybe a parts affiliate program
Already have a great idea for a squeeze page
Will have to look up the definition of building a list and what that means

    Any other good ideas?

Another critical aspect would be the type of website. Would a forum or website be best? Also, should I focus on a specific niche e.g specific brand car or all cars in general?

Have you considered offline marketing? You could build website for small business owners in the automotive industry. You already have the basic skills needed and you would have good credibility with potential customers as you understand them, their specific business problems and you 'speak the lingo' they do. That is a real advantage when dealing with people who aren't familiar with online marketing.

I have built a few websites for business owners in the same industry I work in and I can understand their difficulties with marketing and getting new clients and speak with them easily about the importance of have a properly designed website. They trust me more because I'm 'one of them'. You could start with local marketing, advertise in industry magazines and promote yourself locally. You can already do the writing for the site as you know the industry.

as others have said writing guides and DIY products is also a great way to go. Good luck!

Forget about "writing", use VIDEO. I say that because your subject matter demands it.

      1. Here's a 800 word article about how to fix a water pump on a 2001 accent. (yawn)
      2. Here's a 5 minute video, SHOWING you exactly how to fix a water pump on a 2001 accent.

In the time it would take you to write one article, you could have several videos up on your site.

      Content, content, content.

How about you make videos on how to fix the common problems. Below the videos, link to the products you use to fix the problem (with your affiliate link, of course) and describe why whatever it is, is the best choice. etc..

Then you could also have pages with reviews of the automotive parts.

I wonder about a list.... if the people are looking to fix a particular problem, what would you entice them to be on your list for?

I like what John said - video rules for your type of info-business.

If you need something to make faster money while you're building your info business, you should check into selling auto parts and accessories on eBay - it is a booming market.

A lot of people pick parts at local junkyards and resell them on eBay. Vintage stuff does well, but so do some of the more in-demand, current items.

Just a thought if you're needing to bridge the gap between the future info business and the NOW needs.

I was browsing around clickbank a while ago and saw a guy selling videos for people buying cars. what to look for when you buy a used car, etc..

I didn't look much into the product, because it seemed like something spit out by a marketing team, and the sales pages seemed like it could easily steal your lead with call to actions for their own opt-in list.

If I were you I would look into micro payments. There are plugins for WordPress where you can display part of your article (you choose how much) and then ask the viewer to pay you to display the remainder of the article. You could charge a buck or two to help people this way and it will add up big time. You should without doubt start your own website and keep your articles to yourself, there are many payment methods available to you.

Ahh, what I would do to have an actual talent like you do.

Videos are the right way to go.

I would package them in a membership site and use clickbank as the processor. DIY stuff can do great on clickbank and you get affiliates promoting it for you. It's the sort of thing I like to promote myself and can lend itself nicely to PPC etc. Of course, the best thing about it is recurring income.

You can aim broadly at general car repairs/maintenance, basic car maintenance for women (no offense to anyone just a good demographic), custom car work/case studies. Throw in bikes, ATVs and PWCs and the sky is the limit.

If you are comfortable in front of a camera and can engage an audience or know someone who can, go for it.
