How appropriate.


I am just amazed for so many reasons.

First of all CNN got out marketed.

Ashton knows the power of going viral and giving people a cause to rally around. (even if it's a silly one)



I am also amazed how new Twitter is and that Yahoo and Google had billions but they still did not think of it.

I love that. It makes me think that any one of us can be sitting on the next big thing if we believe and take action.

To me, the worst thing is that a "news" agency got involved in this type of "competition" in the first place. Talk about a truly sad commentary on their credibility. Not to mention the fact that they should have been able to do it with no problem. After all, if they have 1 or 2 million viewers at any given moment, that's only getting 5% to 10% to follow them.

Disgraceful.

I have no problem with Mr. Kutcher doing this - he's an entertainer. But, in my opinion, CNN has lost any shred of journalistic integrity it may have had; along with any remaining pride or dignity.

I would have said this about ANY "news" provider engaging in any such nonsense.

It's a non-story, unless the headline is "The Demise of CNN".

The most users of the web and sites like twitter are the younger generation. They would rather listen to what Ashton has to say about the US than what CNN has to say...

CNN is available everywhere.. tv, email, websites... how many modes of live updates do u get from kutcher himself?

thus the appeal to be kutcher's follower is stronger than that of CNNs'

Ask yourself.. you have a CNN anchor making a comment and on a different channel, your idol/icon/role model making a comment on the same topic.. who would you rather listen to?

Your point came across just fine. And it's on the mark. Many people are more concerned with what celebrities think on political issues than news people or even their elected representatives. And heaven forbid thinking for themselves...

The scary part comes when you listen to many of the most politically vocal celebrities. Outside of their talent for making large sums of money from playing pretend with other peoples' words, many of them are dumber than a box of rocks.

The ratings wars have gutted much of what used to be a highly respected news media. Now the major news outlets cover an earthquake, and election and a movie premiere with the same seriousness.

As for Ashton Kutcher, I couldn't even conceive of caring less about what Demi Moore's boy toy thinks about anything...

Ashton's twitter profile was promoted by Twitter themselves in their suggested "friends" area so he got a lot of people befriending him that way. Especially since his "name" isn't @Aston or his real name so most people wouldn't have found him that way otherwise.

I don't think it's newsworthy though but I think that since it was more people are now going to follow CNN because it was a friendly competition. At least the younger kids.

This explains alot I was driving to my business today in Corpus Christi and on the video billboard near by work there was a huge ad that said "follow Ashton on Twitter and a link" and usually it is for like car companies and stuff. I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on as it seemed very odd...

I wouldn't have minded this Ashton v CNN stunt as much if they would have been doing it for charity .... loser has to pay X dollars to an agreed-upon charity.

I mean, it was fun and all - free publicity for each ... but now what?

Will CNN provide continuous content to keep it's 1 million followers or will it slink back into a corner and result in a mass unfollow?

At least with Ashton, he is frequently tweeting, sending in pics of a movie he's working on, links to charities he endorses, etc etc.

Ashton knew the potential of using twitter. Now that he has over a million followers, for every link he tweets, he sends at least 20,000 visitors to it. I saw the stats for the traffic he sent to his youtube video by tweeting it once.

But then with more of these people, twitter is becoming a popularity contest (or was it already?)

P.S.: My astrologer asked me to change my twitter name from @Ramkarthik to @rplusk as in @aplusk to get 10,000 followers this week.

Actually they are doing it for a good cause.

They done it to raise money to buy mosquito nets so people do not die from malaria.
