List building question - 2 different versions of your site

Hi, a question for fellow list-builders.

I'm considering having 2 different versions of my site. One that advertises my newsletter in the sidebar. This one will be for those who haven't subscribed to my list yet.

The other version will be for my list members, and it will display my PRODUCTS in my sidebar. This one will be hidden from Google rankings, and only visible to my list-members.

Is this something you have done? Please do share your experiences.

I think that's a good strategy but how do you plan on keeping the products from google's eyes? are you utilizing a wordpress plugin?

Well I've sort of done it already. I simply installed a new instance of wordpress in a subfolder (called 'members') under the same domain. I cloned the settings from the original site using backupbuddy. I used robots meta tags to 'noindex' the duplicate pages that I don't want to be indexed by Google.

The thing I'm concerned about though, is that my Google-exposed site won't benefit from all the traffic and comments I'll get from my list. Because I'll be pointing my list-members to the hidden site.
