Physical product upsell inversion?

I know that typically a DVD is perceived as having higher value than downloadable or streamed video content; however I'm interested in your opinions on whether or not in certain markets the reverse might be true; that people would pay MORE for the ease of watching it immediately, online.

I'm thinking of an extremely tech-savvy crowd (network engineers to be precise).

So the model would go sell the DVD for $47 or full online access for $77 or whatever.

Normally people would charge $47 for download, then more for DVD.

What are your thoughts?

that's an interesting idea.. it works with people's desire for immediate gratification. You'd probably have to work on how you frame the offer/pitch though.. maybe make the immediate download available via a membership site.

yeah - that's kind of what I was thinking. Shipping always takes at least a few days right? Membership could be granted immediately...

There is a place for both. Some people would like instant access and others the DVD. And some would pay for both versions. I have seen offers combining both for a special price. You'd just have to test to see what works.
