I used to use scriptlance for this, but now I believe they were absorbed by freelancer.com. You can try them, they have one of the biggest freelancer databases inlcuding programmers.

    Hi Kim,

We always use Odesk or Freelancer but having said that there's plenty of people here on the WF who will be looking for work :-)

Before I learned PHP myself, I used Guru.com a lot. Always had pretty good luck finding competent developers there. I've used Elance on occasion as well - there's definitely some talent there too. Not to mention there are quite a few decent web developers here at the WF these days, so that's another option.

As with anywhere though, most of the better developers are going to be on the upper end of the price range, so you usually get what you pay for (but you knew that already).

Yeah, totally agree with the solutions mentioned above. Guru.com can be used to find out expert competent developers. Also at Elance you can find some experienced talented developers.

I used to use Scriptlance to hire coders for the jobs I didn't have time to do, once they were taken over by Freelancer I switched to oDesk (I never liked the Freelancer platform). Prefer their model now as I occasionally have the need to hire people over a longer period rather than a simple project basis.

oDesk is full of spammers now a days. After posting a job there, a lot of people apply there with a copy paste cover letter without even reading the job description. Which is ridiculous.

I always post my jobs as "Invite Only" With specific requirements for applicants for when they apply

This is a great idea! I love Odesk but you do have to be careful with the wannabes and fake profiles. I have 3 requirements when I search for new help.

1 - I try very hard to only hire independent workers, no agencies.
2 - They need to have at least a 4.5 rating.
3 - They need to have worked on Odesk before. No brand new people!

I used to always look for the cheapest worker who told me they could do a good job. But ethics are lacking when these people are starving for work and some of them will say anything.

I hired 3 "cheap" people in a row that went AWOL on me part way into the project. They were all new to Odesk. So I have also learned to never accept non-responsiveness. I make it clear they have 24 hours to respond to me, which I feel is acceptable...

Ask them to put special word in bid or message by bidders defined by you in listing in the end or middle like "PHP JOB" so you get idea that they are spammers so you don't have to bother to look in to their bid.

My vote is for freelancer.com, which used to be script lance. I've used it many times with great success. Tip: place your project and set you budget to the lowest. Wait at least three days before considering any offers, this will give the good people from India time to find your project an bid. Pour though the feedback and have conversations before selecting a programmer to make sure their English speaking skills are good enough. You can get some really cheap quality work this way.

There's lots of sellers on Fiverr that could help you.

You can also try Fiverr and Staff.com. You can post gigs on Fiverr starting at $5, just think of what you are willing to offer for that amount and then build off that in increments of $5.

Staff.com has much more competitive rates because it's for global staff (for example they have web developers for $1200), but not so great if you are hiring someone locally.

When outsourcing, you may first think to post your ad on elance or oDesk. These can be a great way to find programmers. But along with the built-in billing and screen monitoring benefits comes a higher cost, and many of these programmers only want short-term gigs. I've found fabulous programmers through oDesk, but I also recommend you post your ad on local job sites, like onlinejobs.ph or webgeekph.com/jobs to attract a different kind of crowd.
