Hey everyone,

I was wondering what tips or tricks you guys can give me for a person who just created a forum using the software MyBB.

Thanks!

I would start adding controversial posts to the forums and then notify others that you want them to come add your opinion. I recently created a new online community and start posting controversial articles and shared them on numerous facebook pages in the niche and suddenly the number of members exploded as people wanted to give their opinion. It has grown at a decent rate, over a dozen signups in the past 24 hours along. The problem is most people like to lurk and not actually post.

For a forum, or any community for that matter, to be successful, there needs to be a strong motivation to talk and have conversation. Just like on these forums, there are clear sections with very specific topics of conversation.

Unfortunately, nobody tends to post on a forum without any posts on. You need members to get members. I recommend you actively participate and create threads yourself, and then invite friends/family members to come and join in as well. You'll give the forum a more active atmosphere, and give a reason for new people to come along and start posting.

Establish a blog and load it with great content. Post videos. Give advise and tips. Build a community. Build a mailing list by offering a newsletter. Once you've got a substantial group of dedicated, loyal visitors/followers direct them to the forum. It would have been better to build the community first and then put up the forum but it can still work this way. Good luck.

Why make a blog first? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the forum?

Not at all. You build a following by offering great content. You have your blog out on the Internet where anyone can come and look at your stuff. They begin to return because it's high quality. They tell their friends who tell their friends. As I've said, once you have followers you introduce the forum, where they can get even more primo info. A lot of successful forums have been born this way.

It always comes back to excellent content. That's what drives the Internet. Everything else is window dressing.

Since it's a gaming forum you should join 2-3 other gaming forums and regularly contribute on there and leave a link to your forum in your signature. You can also create your own threads every now and then to start the conversation, get more views to your signature, etc.

Maybe join some Facebook groups for gamers too and post in there...

Depends on how you have things set up.

Is it open to the public to see and have to be a member to post like the WF?

If so, find some good keywords to rank for and start some new threads.

Add a few stickies you know gamers would enjoy. Cheats, tricks and tips for the top games. Have the list downloadable to members only.

Start a Fan Page and use any social media you can.

    Partner up with other forums.

Just a few ideas for you

Yes it's open to the public! What do you mean by keywords?

SEO some threads. Like "Cheats For Black Opps 2/two" if you SEO this thread good enough with good back links, you can rank in Google for that thread.

To give you an example. Go to the WSO section and type in some of the keywords into Google. You will see some WSO's that rank very well in Google.

Of course the WF has the upper hand being so big.

You would have to research for low competition keywords and still use headlines, outbound links ext...

The same steps as you would for an article.

I'm not familiar with SEO'ing and stuff. Is there a specific forum I could read on for a better understanding?

You can find a lot of information in this section -
Adsense / PPC / SEO Discussion Forum

Also search in Google for blogs explaining forum/thread SEO.

somehow create a strong incentive for people to come back. Whether it's a thread that gives stuff away for free, having it gamified, etc

I installed a forum for a client once, he did it against my advice, and, unfortunately it is now closed.

I had advised him to get a large enough group of enthusiastic people first, then create the forum for them to talk to each other.

He tried, in vain to become multiple personalities, and this shone through like a beacon in the fog.

It appeared as if every user had the same grammar, and spelling deficiencies, doh!

They are simple to create, but building and running them is another story.

You are right. Forums solely will never help you to get traffic and ranking but once it is popular, it will surely bring a lot of traffic. But it is important first to get a group of people who are really interested engaging with each other.

In my opinion, forums aren't really a device for gaining traffic, they're better used for retaining current traffic and customers. Building up a community will give your visitors an attachment to your websites, which should keep them returning to your other sites where you can turn a profit.

Compared to blogs or normal sites, forums have the potential to display a lot more useful content. Think about this forum. All of the user generated content here is 100 times more useful than the content on a single blog or site. With forums, you can really get your users to the work for you. But first, you need to give them a reason to visit your forum - just like any other website.

It's definitely not going to be easy but this tips have really been helpful to a friend of mine who own a forum in human disease niche.

    1. You are going to need some budget to get going and real fast too.

    2. Get your feet wet in PPC, banner ads.

    3. Optimize your home and few pages and rank them for your chosen keywords. The organic traffic is free, highly targeted and effective.

    4. Advert the forum on the top sites related to your niche. Like if you have a dating forum, advertise it on top dating sites or social networking sites like FB that allow advert.

    5. Pick a few site with loyal clients and create sub section on your forum strictly for their discussion.

    6. Get a good internet marketer/manager.

    7. Have good moddys.

    8. Be open to changes, ideas and more..
