Cut my blog set up time

I put off setting up new blogs due to the boring part of importing all the plugins I like to use. That used to take me forever. I probably use too many, but they each serve a function I want.

So I thought, why can't I just upload them via FTP. I thought that might create a problem so I came to WF and asked the question a couple days ago. Someone replied that would work fine, so I did that with my next blog and I just had to go in and activate them and I have someone working on that blog right now and it looks pretty good and seems to work.

I just uploaded my set of plugins to another blog and it just takes a couple of minutes or so. Much better than typing in the name and searching or finding it on my hard drive and uploading it that way, one at a time.

I keep a list of plugins that I like and then decide, depending upon what I want to do, if I am going to use that particular plugin. I like to go to the site and be sure they are continuing to update them so I am not uploading a plugin that the developer has abandoned. But, keeping a list of the exact name has cut down the installation process and allowed me to outsource easily.

      Hi Gail,

      Smart lady!

We automated that because we have tons of blogs and it took too much time. Instead of manually checking every plugin and every blog we have a Master Blog with all of the plugins we use.

This plugin checks for installed plugins that are no longer in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory. A new page will be created in the WordPress Admin (Dashboard) that alerts us to all of the installed plugins that we need to remove or possibly deactivate until a newer version of the plugin is available.

Pretty much the same way I do it.

Of course configuring a new blog is a bit of a pain but I have done it so many times I do it on autopilot and just make sure I have enough coffee lol.

I have most of my small sites on hostgator, so when I begin a new blog i use the online file manager and copy paste all my plugins/themes to the new site, takes all of 10 seconds and I'm done.

    Hi Tim,

Congratulations. A lot of people are afraid of FTP and you just proved that it is not to be afraid of and works well for your business. Well done!

Here is one of the ways we install be it one blog or more. Less than 1 minute per install.

    1) http://www.wpdesktop.com (not an affiliate link)
You run it from your own computer. Fill-in the form fields and click install. Once the form is complete you have the options to install WP from wordpress.org or your own custom wordpress installation from your own computer or your own URL. Also, it installs the MySQL Databse for WP at the same time. That allows you you to assign a custom MySQL Prefix which is one of the best security features. It will also install your theme.

Plugin wise. Add your plugins to the form and they will be automatically installed and activated for you.

There are tons of other features such as create categories, pages, and posts - all you do is fill in the form fields.

You may also create a Master Blog. This is perfect for deploying blogs with all of your custom settings, themes, etc. very easy and very fast.

Some of our blogs are over 1GB in size and it may take 3 to 4 minutes, but a small blog or even a master blog takes less than a minute per installation.

    2) http://www.backupcreator.com (not an affiliate link)
This is the perfect "clone" though it is called a backup application. We use wpdesktop for the bare bones WP installation on new domains and import the clone into the new domain. What makes this essential to us is it clones and imports all directories and folders that are outside the main directory that WP is installed. Very handy for affiliate redirect folders and images that are not part of the WP Media Manager.

Again, congrats for taking it to the next level.

If you do any type of regular blog setup then you should be using a tool such as WPTwin.

You can setup one blog with all the regular settings and plugins you want and then duplicate that same blog and setup on any domain with just one click. That means you can have an exact duplicate bog setup in about 10 seconds.

I use this tool all the time and it has saved me a ton of time over the years. Also great for backing up your blogs quickly and easily.
