GCD vs Wordtracker - Results might surpise you.

So I am all giddy, because I think I just uncovered a cool niche with no competitors. Obviously by posting this I am going to kill this keyword, but I figure it better for all of us to learn from this vs. me trying to hold on to it.

I was using google cash detective to search for some new keywords / niches.

"rihanna umbrella" < I dug up this keyword thinking of doing some ringtone marketing.

GCD says it gets 600k+ searches (with no PPC competition) . . . so naturally I get excited.

Then I go to Word tracker and it says it gets 203 searches / month.
Free Keyword Suggestion Tool From Wordtracker

Any ideas at such a large difference? Who is to be trusted, how can you tell for sure?

Most keyword tools are just estimates..

    As productcreator details above..

Getting data from places like DogPile is not exactly a reliable source..

They get data from an engine that get's about 0.000003% of web traffic and then multiply it by X amount

    Peace

Free WordTracker tool doesn't look at Google...

So it's volume is often different.

The free wordtracker looks at places like metacrawler...etc

As mentioned, Wordtracker gets data from the metacrawlers and assumes searches for the major search engines via assumption calculations.

So the general consensus is that GCD would be much more reliable since it uses Google to aggregate its data ?

      Yes

I've ditched Wordtracker ages ago. The free Google Keyword Tool gives much better estimates and also if you know what the hell are you doing - you can find some really sweet low hanging fruit

Well, the Google Keyword Tool External, shows approx search volume as 673,000 BUT the March search volume reads "not enough data". It may mean that in the past the search volume was very high but is no longer so.
This is my interpretation, Am I right? I dunno, maybe some other "gurus" here may explain.

Anyone use the Brainstorm It! tool in Sitesell's SiteBuildIt! product? I think it uses Wordtracker, and the results sometimes are strange.
