Affiliate Marketers: What Do You Look For In a Product?

Just an open-ended question for all you people doing Affiliate Marketing. I am working on a couple of clickbank products right now. One is to test the waters and see how it works. It's a quitting smoking product. I'm sure they're probably a dime a dozen, but I actually have a pretty good niche/angle to hit it with, so I want to make it and see how it goes.

The second product is WAY more exciting to me, and has a huge untapped market that will recur and renew itself annually. This product is taking a lot longer to develop. I have a team of 3 people working with me on it and I'm about 3 years into it, although I think we could be done and ready to go within the next 3-6 months.

So I'm just trying to get my feet wet with the smoking cessation product for now. I'm trained in hypnosis and NLP, as well as have some other experience that I will bring into the product. Here's a simple home video I made teaching one of my techniques. It was shot from the hip, not intended to be more than just educational for some friends of mine. (YouTube: Using Your Brain 24/7)

I also have a self-published book that I am in the process of converting to an ebook but honestly, I don't think the market is big enough to bother with beyond just putting it up on Kindle/Amazon/etc. The Art of Street RidingThe Art of Street Riding .

So, that's where I'm coming from. I am fairly new to this. But just in general, I'm wondering what are the things that make the good Affiliate Marketers want to jump up and represent your product? What aspects of the product make it appeal to you?

    1. Is high quality and will serve my readers.
    2. I like the product.
    3. Pays big commissions.
    4. Recurring commission is a big bonus.
    5. Good sales page (it converts).

      The first thing I look at is the company itself, are they trustworthy, do they have a track record? Most of my affiliate money comes from the adult industry and from my experience about half of them are shady, they simply won't pay you, or will shave your sales. I'm sure its the same in the non-adult world.

        1. I look for traffic. What good is promoting the product if no one is there to buy it?

        2. is the product successfully being sold by other marketers? Competition is healthy.

        3. is the product something that I can use? If so, I buy it and try it. No sense in wasting everyone's time trying to cold sell a shitty product, not to mention your reputation is on the line. If it works for me, and I like it, then easier to confidently sell it to interested buyers.

        When I first started out 7 years ago, I tried to sell anything and everything with a good commission, regardless of the products quality.. This is a bad approach and I strongly suggest you always imagine yourself in a position where you have to recommend a product to a friend.

      Ditto. This pretty much is the same as me.

      Excellent product that really ads value to my subscribers, pays decent (which gives me and my subscribers a reason to promote it to others)

        That the product actually works is now by far the biggest reason i will offer it to anyone.

        When i first started in IM i just pumped any good looking offer without even thinking about trying it myself.

        This was a big no no,resulting in lots of unsubscribers and complaints.

    Great customer services/good reputation of the owner - for my customers

    I look for products that are going to help my list move to the next level. It doesn't have to be the best converting offer, it doesn't have to be offering the biggest payout either. I make more money being genuine with my list and sending them only the cream of the crop than I would if I just sent out every second offer like most affiliates seem to nowadays.

    It's all about your list and their needs. To many affiliate marketers think about themselves first and their list second. It won't cut it.

    That they aren't collecting emails on their sales page by giving away
    stuff for free. That way a lot of people will pick up the freebie and if
    they are going tonbuy they are most likely using a link that is in one
    of the vendors newletter emails. Total conversion killer in my mind.

    But that's for all my niche affiliate sites and blogs.

    When it comes to my main list which is the most important and
    powerful thing in my business I'll have to go with WillR.

    My list only gets what I think is best for them.

      Thanks for the info, one and all. You're giving me great things to think about.

      Toni... What if you were given access to the same, or similar, freebies that the content creator has and were allowed to use them as part of your pitch? Would that help put something into consideration for you? Or would it be an overload on your list? Or would you offer it to your list with a second opt-in, so they could reply and get the freebie? Or would you say, "Screw that, too much effort!" Just wondering.

    Gravity means nothing and is definitely not something you should use to choose what products to promote. There could be a product with a gravity of 2 and those 2 affiliates are making 100's of sales every day. There could be a product with a gravity of 50 and those 50 affiliates are only making one sales per day.

    So gravity means nothing and is definitely not a measure of the quality or success of a product.

    Do your own testing. Only then will you find which products are actually converting best. You will often find those products with very small gravity score convert just as well as (or even better) than those with higher gravity... and you have a lot less competition.

    Here are a few things I look for:

    1. Quality Offering
    2. Solves Major Problem
    3. Decent Commission
    4. Decent Sale Price
    5. Quality Sales Message

    I won't touch a product with an exit popup offering a discount.

    I have a question about choosing products, If Gravity is not a good indicator what if products listed in the market place were listed in order of the conversion rate.

    Let's say you choose a category and all the products shown in that market place appeared in order of their conversion rate?

    Would this be a better indicator of which product to promote?

    The reason is I'm opening an affiliate/vendor bank that does this and I would like your opinions.

    When it comes to Clickbank products, I stay away from the make money niche, and the less gravity the better. Clickbank gravity means nothing IMO. I rather promote some product that promises to get rid of fruit flies, than some rehashed make money product that will be getting refunded anyways.
