Are Press Releases Dead?

I had was recently told by someone who runs a press release service recently that "Press Releases are DEAD."

He also said, "Google has sophisticated algorythms as of Fall of 2013 that shut down press release distribution. Even PRWeb has mostly been shut down for distribution and are having to basically lie to their clients."

So he said definitely would advise AGAINST using press releases on any level for public relations or marketing projects...

Shocked to hear this, because I thought PR was an increasingly MORE effective marketing channel in the modern world these days, but when I asked he wouldn't tell me more or give me any details...

So Im wondering if anyone has anymore data or knowledge or clarity on what this is all about...

I imagine he's being a bit dramatic, and it probably means that for SEO it will have little to no effect on search results... But I find it strange to hear this, because press releases have accounted for some of the longest visits to my site, therefore being a high quality traffic source, albeit not extremely high "volume."

No, the release is not dead. Mediocrity is dead. The days of mass emailing the same old press release out are done. The ante is upped and the pitch has to be perfect. As a publicist based in a small town in western NC, but pitching to folks all over, I can say that the press release is not dead. There are still some reporters and editors out there who will write exactly what I (or any other publicist) give them, so I better send it well written and ready to go.

We can attest to what Goergecamins is saying. With a good press release you can get some huge exposure and of course traffic and links to your site. Our latest press release was picked up by Reuters, CNBC, Yahoo news and hundreds more. Every press release, as long as it is well crafted is going to do your business good.

Imagine if internet marketers discovered the power of press & publicity that doesn't involve backlinks...

    ...wait, on second thought DON'T.

I still have good results from PRweb Press Releases, depending on the content and the promotion announced I received 1-3 calls or generate some email inquiries and a nice spike in traffic.
