Hey guys,

We're looking for recommendations for video hosting. It doesn't need to be free but does need to be compatible with SnagIt and not super-slow to upload like Screencast currently is.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

Neil

    Thanks for your suggestions guys.

We've decided to try out a combination of Wistia and YouTube for SEO so we'll see how it pans out.

    Thanks again.

I want to rec vimeo. For me, they are super. Hope they keep on growing. Business pro plan is $199 per year. Well, this is a bit expensive. Basically you can embed just like with you tube, but you tube is free and costs your zero money. You tube I do not rec. They like to take down videos for any reason.

VIMEO is good. so what they offernig in VIMEO+
    • + 5GB/week storage space
    • + Absolutely zero ads
    • + Faster priority uploading
    • + Unlimited HD everything
    • + Full player customization
    • + Advanced statistics
There are plenty of others also, but you should go with trusted one.

It depend how do you want your viewers to see your videos.

For downloadable videos, I would strongly recommend Amazon S3. You only pay for what you use. Can be quite expensive in long run.

For streaming video, Vimeo is good. But you will need to pay the subscription fee to off the the advertisements. Youtube is free but lots of restrictions.

You mentioned SEO. AmazonS3 + CloudFront has some advantages that might be worthwhile investigating.

Yes you pay a little for storage, but unless you are planning on duplicating Webinar Swaps or something, I don't think it's going to break the bank.

      1. The storage location is yours and you have a LOT more control over your content and it's distribution.
      2. It's fast. Add CloudFront, and it's Faster. Faster than any of the other hosting sites mentioned. In case you aren't familiar, CF caches content from your s3 bucket to 'edge' servers around the world, and automagically points your visitors to the nearest/fastest edge server for your files.

      3. Cloudfront is capable of streaming, with JWplayer which is free for non commercial use. Otherwise, you have to pay for JWPlayer. I just do the download configuration because it's easy, I can use any player I want, and it the videos will still play on iPhones and iPads without a lot of hassle.

As far as the SEO piece. Cloudfront creates a new URL that points to your s3 bucket. Something a little ugly like d2945fx7tcadtt.cloudfront.net

But... then you can create up to 10 CNAMES for that url. A CNAME is just a DNS redirect you setup in CPanel in about 5 seconds which points to your cloudfront URL.

In the end, instead of a youtube, vimeo or s3 url for your video, you have something like dl.mysite.com\videofilename.mp4 and/or
      dl.myothersite.com\videofilename.mp4

Again, you can create cnames for up to 10 different domains for each CF distribution.

Finally, to answer your Snagit doesn't have a specific s3 accessory, but it does allow you to export your mp4 directly and they DO have one that will output to WordPrerss. Just Click the Share Tab and go to 'More Accessories'

I used amazon s3 and honestly it was awesome for speed for anyone since its just one massive network of servers. It does however come at a bit of a price tag. What I did was hosted it on there for the first month to help with the surge of traffic from launch and then moved it over to my own server once that traffic started to settle down.

Depending on how they are used but I agree with some others above and I would use amazon s3. You can always also add the videos to youtube if you wanted to generate more traffic from there.

I haven't tried Lead Player yet but the way you said it, it seems to be a good one. I have always used Amazon S3 in combination with Easy Video Player which works very well for me.

I use Amazon S3 for one site, but my preference is always YouTube. You get the best of both worlds there - the free hosting and the traffic. There are some restrictions - for example you cannot put videos for a paid membership site there.
