You should wait until you have a decent amount of traffic (300-500 visitors per day) and a decent amount of unique content. Your site should also be more than 6 months old and do not add to many banners or ads on your site.

Why? Not good for ranking to start from the beginning?

No it does not mean monetizing from the beginning will effect it's ranking. But when you will start from the beginning and you will see no earning from it, there are chances of getting frustrated through it.

When you will have a decent amount of traffic and they will bring some money in your account regularly, it will motivate you to work harder.

I don't believe that putting affiliate links in from the very start will hurt your site, others will disagree and say it has a negative effect.

The way I see it is that the sooner you start getting clicks on your links, the sooner you can start split testing to see what works.

You can also cloak your affiliate links using pretty links or something similar

I would say you can start monetizing your site from the day you start receiving traffic.

You can monetize over and over again, but if you're not actually testing against traffic, it's pointless. Traffic is the ultimate measurement when it comes to monetizing. I've made a lot of mistakes in the past monetizing my site for hours thinking it's not converting like it should realizing it was fine, I just needed the right targeted traffic. When you start driving traffic, you can see what's working and what's not and change it according to your results, lot's of fun

    It depends.
If you need to apply to affiliate programs, I find it's good to have your site up and running with traffic. This increases the chances of being approved.

If it's Adsense or CPA and you already have accounts or an affiliate program for which you're approved, start monetizing right away.

Frankly, I don't relish having to go back and adding affiliate links in published posts ... it's boring so I add aff links as I go along. The only exception is when I'm waiting to get sufficient traffic where I'm certain to be approved for an affiliate program.

The best time to monetize it is when you are getting ANY amount of visitors.

Why wait any longer when you can be making money from day 1?

I think it depends on the type of site and where you want it to be. If you are primarily depending on SEO to bring you random hits from across the web, then start monetizing ASAP... because once those people are gone, they're gone. On the other hand, if you're building more of a relationship with your audience, waiting until you have a good audience can decrease the "annoyance factor" in the sense that you aren't pitching a bunch of stuff before they know you are are comfortable with what you're doing.

For instance, if I'm reading a blogsite, and I see a pitch or two on the first posts, ugh... I can't really trust what he's saying. On the other hand, if I read what he has provided in the past, and get a ton of value, and then at the end read, "And here's a cool product..." I'd tend to give it a little more thought.

If you have a ton of information up already, I say start monetizing now. If it's still a work in progress, and you're trying to build a relationship, then holding off and just focusing on providing good content will probably pay more dividends down the road, than focusing on monetization.
