Newbie Q - Taking Payments Online

Hi everybody,

I've trawled through 3 pages of search material without finding the answer/s I was looking for, so hopefully I'm not going to be asking a question that's been asked a million times.

Here's what I'm wanting to achieve

I'm using Russel Brunson's Micro continuity system.

Customer buys my free +shipping and handling CD for 2.95 and gets 2 weeks free trial of my continuity program. After that they are billed at 7.99 a week for the next 12 weeks.

In the future I'd like to be able to upsell them with a OTO, but I don't have anything to upsell them to at the moment as this is a brand new (started a few weeks ago) project.

So what I'm looking for is the best way to:

Do a soft optin to my free trial (i.e. they can just order the CD if they want, they don't have to take the free trial)?

Do recurring billing?

Do Upsells and OTO's?

Do 1click payments?

1shopping cart is the recommended approach on the Micro continuity course, but this is where I get confused and finally ask my question!

I thought I just needed to get a 1shoppingcart account and that was that. But it seems I also need to have a merchant account. Whilst doing my own research on the Warrior forum, I came across mention of Payment gateways and merchant accounts.

Can some kind Warrior please explain these terms (Payment gateway, merchant account etc) in plain English?

I've only ever used paypal before, so this is all a bit new to me.

All comments gratefully received as I've spent a lot of valuable time trying to work this out unsatisfactorily and when it comes to taking other peoples money, I'm not sure learning by trial and error is such a good idea!

Kindest regards

Marcus

    Marcus,

I would go and take a look at DLGuard, I don't use it personally, but it is highly reccomended amongst the community, and a Warrior here created it I believe. I'm pretty sure it can do all that you wish.

      Sweet,

DLGuard looks good (will have a deeper look later as I should be downstairs spending some quality time with my wife!)

Do I still need a merchant account (What exactly does this mean? Why do you need one? What does it do?) or a payment gate way?

      Still confused

      Kindest regards

      Marcus

    Hi Marcus,

I just completed Russell Micro-Continuity course and I completely understand your question.

If you're doing upsells and OTOs then Russell explains that you want to implement a 1-Click order so that you can add the sale to the existing order. Because the customer has placed the initial order, then the upsell and OTO is the customization of an order that has already been place. In 1ShoppingCart, you can replace their order before it's settled in your merchant account.

Without the 1-Click integration with 1ShoppingCart, then the customer would need to re-input their payment information. This is why you'll have a problem with using your PayPal account with OTOs.

However, you can always do the continuity upsell using PayPal by using Subscriptions.

But if you need to do 1-Click OTOs then I really think you're going to need a merchant account. A merchant account allows for you to accept Visa, MasterCard, AmEx and will forward those funds to your business checking account.

A payment gateway allows for you to collect payments from the customer and will forward the transaction to your merchant account provider.

1ShoppingCart will collect the payment information and send it to the payment gateway who will then provide an authorization number.

I am not sure with 1shoppingcart whether you need merchant account or not, but here is the difference between merchant account and payment processor:

Merchant account: You will be having own payment gateway, bank account to process orders. So you will include that payment gateway (Like linkpoint.com, authorize.net) into your cart and orders/creditcards are processed by your own system directly.

Payment processor: They have their own gateway and merchant account. They process orders on your behalf and take a small fee from you. Because most webmasters don't want to manage their merchant accounts or high fees of maintaing own gateways, they go with third party payment processors like Paypal, 2Checkout.com etc.
