Paying people to see ads, is there a place for this? Pros vs Cons

I was looking into this and found out that several companies have tried this over the years and it has not worked out well for them.

Is there a secret combination that would make this work?

What are your thoughts, it seems like the last thing that has not been conquered or a solution found.

If you could give people a choice of ads to look at that they have an interest in and then pay them in points or real money?

    While it could work (with minimal profits) if the numbers were all worked out, I highly doubt that the people buying the ads would prefer a system like this over say more organic traffic. To make this work, you'd have to be paying the people viewing the ads very little, which would probably give people little incentive to go on your site - and the people that do decide to earn these "points" on your site, would likely not be interested in spending actual money on other people's products anyway. A system like the above really defeats the point of adverts.

      Is a good example of what you describe.

      As the traffic is generally aware that they'll be viewing adverts, odds are they are less likely to convert.

      I was thinking that if you just wanted to advertise in your local area to get the message out. I have tried Google ads, Facebook, Craigslist, local Newspaper & Coupons and at best I would double my money. Keep in mind that I was offering a service requires my time each time I get a job, so this is not a digital product.

      What about a reward based system like: "Find a buyer for my car and get $50"?

    Are you looking for a way to make money locally?

    How about a facebook page with people interested
    in ways to save money locally(ie coupons), then
    you sell advertising to local companies who want
    a boost in sales.

    To get started, you could offer your services for free
    or just use specials you find in newspapers etc to
    populate your page with content and get interested
    followers.

    It sounds like a plan you'd be interested in.

      If the pay rate is low, then you will attract people who care enough about earning an extra buck or two, that they would put in a substantial effort to earn it. Such people generally have little money to spend on advertiser's products.

      If the pay rate is high, you may also attract a richer demographic, but you will attract even more people from the poorer demographic.

      And even if you could attract mostly a richer demographic it is doubtful that high paying ads would be cost justified.

      So it's a tough problem that nobody has cracked.

      And the other big issue is gaming/fraud. How do you now they viewed the ads, rather than say using some software to rack up ad views (see all advantage articles in Wikipedia, etc).
