Default 2 domains held hostage

OK, here's the scoop...

I had 2 domains about to expire (register.com) and went about transferring them. Well, a few days later I get a message saying my auth codes were wrong and that I'd have to resubmit.

By the time I try, my domains are now expired and the whois information shows register.com all across the board, which means if I try to transfer them it will get kicked back because the email address points to register.com

I've talked to them via phone and email and each time they say they'll fix it or look into it, yet nothing has changed. These are money makers and I know its my fault for waiting, but Register is trying to tell me the only way I can unlock them is by renewing them with register.com

I thought that you had 30 days upon expiration to transfer or renew...are they allowed to lock up my domains like this? if so, I guess I'll bite the bullet and pay a ridiculous fee to renew them, but I'd rather not.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Nathan

Call them back and ask to speak to a supervisor. Get the supervisor's name, and tell them that you are having a registry problem and you need to speak to a supervisor capable of helping you with a problem renewal to resolve it right away. Explain to them that you are unable to take 'no' for an answer and need to get their error fixed before you hang up. Hard as* them into resolving it immediately, and don't give up.

Be firm and be polite, stick to the facts only, and keep going till you get what you want. What a nightmare--good luck.

(So do the auto renewal next time, and don't transfer out at the last minute...)

Actually when you are within 60 days on either side of renewal or expiration you CANNOT transfer domains from most registrars. Most of them do this for security reasons and it may even be an icann policy

I suggest you hurry up and pay the renewal fee for one year... wait 60 days and then transfer.

Yes, Josh Anderson is correct. Therefore you will need to renew with register.com and then after 60 days to have them transfer out. That is the only option you can take now.

That certainly sucks, especially since they charge at best 20 bucks for a renewal...

Lesson learned.

Nathan,

On the bright side you have learned something important you can now blog about, or write a short report or article about to help others.

If, as one Warrior claims, an article can, on average, earn $28 you will recoup the extra outlay.

Problem ----> Opportunity
