Big Market, No Saturation

So I am working on a product and decided to do a little more market research. I hadn't done any market research over the past couple years, although I did do a bit when I first started. And what I found today is pretty much in line with what I saw several years ago.

According to web searches and Google Keywords, the market doesn't really exist. But in this case, I am 100% convinced it's just hugely untapped. Nobody is looking for it because it hasn't occurred to them that it exists. I could easily and cheaply dominate the keyword searches, but there just aren't a lot of searches made for this. There's no forum dedicated to it. There's not a single ebook on the topic. And yet it costs millions of people, in America alone, thousands of dollars a year. (No, it doesn't cost every person that much.. but it does cost a small portion of people that much each year... And no... I won't tell you what it is. I've been working on this product for tooooo long!).

I think I'll be able to sell the ebook product for about $40-80;
With a $20 down sell;
A free ebook;
And the possibility of creating a $150 upsell with about a 6-9 month lead time (unless I manage to be able to quit my job with this and focus on it full time)

So my question is, what different strategies would you employ to generate word of mouth? There's not many blogs on the topic. There's no forums dedicated to it. My initial thoughts are to hit up the affiliates bigtime, offer generous commissions, so that I can get as many people as possible getting the word out there. I'm also inclined to create two identical products with clickbank, maybe have 1 priced at $69.95 that I sell directly. And another at $64.95 for affiliates (with the $5 coming out of my pocket), so they have one additional incentive to sell it (the fact that they can undercut my price). I know it sounds like a crazy strategy, but I'm thinking it could really encourage good affiliates to get their boots on and sell!

So... Any thoughts about how to create a new market?

I doubt anybody here has any experience with creating an almost brand new market, but I'd be interested in any thoughts you might have.

    Hopefully you don't find out the hard way why there is no competition there.

    If the market is really there and no competition .. turning this over to an affiliate base could be the worse mistake ever. Rank for the keywords .. squeeze your own juice before going at it affiliate wise.

    I seriously doubt the run of mill affiliate can promote this anyway. You might find an affiliate with a huge list that is similar and the will to cross promote .. good hunting.

      Just to clarify a little bit, because I guess it is a difficult concept to wrap one's head around... I guess an analogous business would be.. to assume I was the first person to ever think of a Dog Training Course. Nobody's looking for it, because they just assume dogs are dogs and training is never something they'd heard of before.

      If I eschewed the affiliate route, then I would largely be in it on my own, within 6 months, competing products could start to show up. I'm not that savvy of a marketer to believe I could just suddenly take the world by storm without some help.

      I have discussed this idea with about a dozen people, including some people that fall into my target market. In each case, their eyes lit up like, "Holy cow! Yeah! Why doesn't that exist??!!!"

      I'm a "big idea" kind of guy. I actually have a second business plan mapped out that is similarly uncharted waters... And I have 6-figure executives saying, "I would use your service in a heartbeat... if only it existed." But that will come AFTER I finish this first product and get it rolling. Crazy ideas are just kinda what I do. I just have no capital to make this second idea work right now, so it's on the backburner.

    It sounds like your product is informational which would be different than my example but similar still. About 5 years ago I had a idea, about 3 years ago i did something about it. Its like what you said, something no one was looking for, it didn't exist. I wanted it for myself so I created it, then figured out how to sell it. Use the forums, if its good people will want it as soon as they are exposed. I'm not getting rich off my little product, it makes me 500ish bucks a month... But it takes no effort and I'm the only game in town. But like someone else mentioned, don't go affiliate route if its really that good. My product is tangible so I got a provisional patent to begin with, but if yours is information it will get stole quicker than you can deposit your first check.

      That's two votes against the affiliate strategy. Help me understand here...

      It is a digital product. It is going to get stolen quickly. It's going to get widely dispersed. Any affiliate who wants to steal my idea will just buy a copy and do so.

      What I have in mind is to use affiliates to totally dominate searches. Any competitor who pops up doesn't just have to outrank me, he has to outrank the 100 other sellers who are trying to pitch my same product.

      What am I missing here?

      Maybe pitch it myself until I start to see competition, and THEN open a ball-busting affiliate program? But by that time, I'm already losing ground...

      I also have the idea of publishing it as a softcover book. And I have experience doing that. The problem is, even at an inflated price, the printing costs don't even make that option as appealing as an affiliate program would be.

    If the niche is unique and no competition, I think you should really tackle it over ppc and test the water a bit. If no one is doing it in clickbank, you can do 2 version. 1 overprice and 1 low-price product to create self compeition. this way, you get to capture both affilaites.

    Again, you need to test it first and see if it works.
