New here, starting up a website.....trying to find the beginner info threads and friendly advice

Hi guys and ladies!
I found your forum by chance on google (which I'm sure you all know wasn't chance at all but strategic efforts).
I am starting up a website soon (will be out of development in just a few weeks).

I found this site while looking for marketing ideas. I believe there are tons of resources here but I admit to being very overwhelmed by the content here.

Additionally, much of the info here seems geared around selling ebooks and capturing email addresses and funneling people into a frenzy over a new piece of written content. It also uses lots of acronyms and assumptions that we newbies do not have just yet.

So, first is there a beginner area to grasp the concepts of, for example, when someone says "grab an Opt-in on each page", what that means, and where to begin looking for that piece of code(?) or whatever to put it there.

Second, my site is intended to be a positive paid information site. Think just answer with a different angle geared more toward consumer shopping.
At this stage I'm not looking to put up ebooks for people to buy, but I do want to drive people to the site, generate interest in our service, and ultimately get them to purchase, and recommend.

Frankly, the sheer volume of marketing tactics and ideas out there are overwhelming. Would love some basic advice to start with, to get the core pieces in place, and then expand and experiment from there.

Right now, I'm not sure whether to start with a paid SEO service, guest blog, try to focus on facebook, adsense (not sure how that works yet), or what.

Advice and recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks

Did you try the "all in one" threads that stays at the top of the main internet marketing disscussion board? there is a lot of great advice up there.

If you are new to web development, and need simple things like your auto responder code your best resource is going to be youtube or the tutorials provided by your auto responder company, but by the sounds of it, you may just want to outsource it.

As for marketing you're going to have to get paid traffic first through adwords, adcenter, facebook ect to get any significant traffic, focus on SEO after you have a healthy amount of content on your website, you will most certainly want to be collecting emails to get people back to your site after their first visit, once you're established you could get larger amounts of traffic with media buys

    Good Luck!

    Hi Rhizzlebop,
    TroyCo's suggestions might be
too mouthful for you at this moment.

From your post, it seem that you have
an idea for your website. I suggest
you build up your content for the site.

At least 30-40 rich, unique content posts.
It is no point for you to drive traffic to
you site now. The traffic will not convert
at this point. You got to have content/value
    for your viewers.

We can discuss more when you are done
    with this part.

    Hear from you. Cheers.

I can remember when I signed up on here years ago. It was like learning a new language. You sure can learn a lot on here. But you will have to piece things together.
I would suggest investing in one quality course that will take you from A-Z. There are a lot of them out there and there are likely free ones also. If you follow a systematic plan it will help you stay focused. Then when you get the hang of it, you can branch out.

Thanks for the positive and helpful comments.
I think finding this site will be a true blessing.

I'll look for an A-Z course. I have to ask, any recommendations?

As for one poster who mentioned not to try and draw traffic until there are 30-40 pieces of information up.
Well, primarily, this site is a service site, not a free article/information site.

My current only means to posting content to the site is through a blog section.
We do not currently have any forums, or otherwise.
I can certainly try to guest blog, but unclear on who would take a blog from an unknown commodity in me.

I am working on blog entries, but I also don't want to unleash them all onto the site at once. Otherwise, I wouldn't have as much ongoing "new" content to reference in tweets and facebook posts later.

To clarify, my main "content" in my narrow vision, is the information provided by others as a "service", which again, in my narrow vision, means I have to find and qualify those participants first in order to use their ratings, testimonials, and good service word of mouth to draw other users to the site. I hope that makes sense without being too explicit.

I've been on this forum for a bit and will agree with you on the abundance of information. My best pieces of advice are:

(1 Can you really make $5,000 doing 15 mins of work a month? Anything you want to garner results will obviously require a deal of effort on your part, despite what people say. Sure, there are methods that can be done in 15-20 mins that will show something. But, the people that have developed those methods have spent a long time in research. Point to this? Be leery of quick money promises.

        2) Try out different models. I think many come here and hear "take action, take action, take action" and get that so ingrained they forget to stop and take a evaluate their model. If something's not working for you, try something else. You're taking action with research and study. But, there does come a point where you just have to try something out.

        3) Don't be afraid to invent new models. The "gurus' you hear about are the ones that taken existing knowledge and evolved it. There is so much information here on the site, it's easy to limit your thinking and tell yourself "there's only a certain methods available to me" Be a pioneer!

        4) Whatever you do, ensure it's quality. All that traffic you're trying to drive to your site are real people who work hard for their money.

And for your last question, you can set up your site to publish your content on a schedule. You can take 20 posts (good sized, quality articles) and easily space that out over a month. A site that is having new content added constantly is loved by Google.

        Hope this all helps.

          Thanks for the tips

          1. I don't believe I can make $5K a m with 15 minutes of work, but good to note that its possible but extremely unlikely. I want to make 10 a day first, and then 100 a day, and work my way up.

          2. I like your point on action vs research. I do feel frustrated that I feel like there is so much action to take I just need to start, but I don't want to waste efforts chasing a C lead, when there are A leads I'm just not aware of. This is why I'm kind of looking for the basic 1,2,3 steps to get going, and I'm sure by the time I get those basics in place, there will be another path already begging to be explored.

3.Agree. I will try my best.

          4. I realize quality often determines success. I personally hate it when I feel like a service I used lacks quality. Does not lend confidence for me to return. That will be a challenge when a portion of the product will be by others. But I will do my best.

Last, when you're referring to articles, is that the same as referring to blog entries?
Currently, our Blog space has been created in such a way that I can post, edit, etc. But I'm pretty sure there is no means to put them in a scheduled release format. Probably because I didn't know that feature existed to even ask for it to be included.
It has been an adventure just getting the site developed. I had to learn a lot just to communicate with the developer on what we wanted it to do.

However, it will be VERY green in regards to any marketing functions as are spoken about here. I'm still unsure if I will be able to modify the product to include some/all of that, or if I'll have to have it done.

Have you looked at using Wordpress for your needs? If you have, then I'm guessing you have your reasons for not using it. If not, I would suggest taking a look. It's the CMS (in my opinion) that can handle most things pretty well. I'm currently developing an e-commerce site with it, and you'll find most people here use it for all of their sites.

Check with your developer about having that feature (schedule posts) added.

See, I'm so starting at ground zero here, that I'm not sure if Wordpress is an entire language the site is built on, or if its something thats added on.

The site is being built by a company in India. Its been interesting going through the process. Things went poorly at first, but finally the project got moved from one project manager to another and has gone much more smoothly since then.

It is likely too late in the game to add the post scheduler feature without doing a chnageorder, and we'd like to get something live and going before spending more on the site itself. But I'll definately take note of that for a future update.

As for the site, its nearly finished, but at zero in terms of SEO or marketing features. I will need to add some type of Opt in feature (from what I've read here, to capture emails) and probably start to generate some kind of newsletter? I mean, what else would I do with the emails?

I have been writing the content for each section ranging from the About Us, Contact us, How the site works, why its a great service, etc etc. About to start on some blog entries where I will basically write small how to's on things people would want to know related to deals.

I also plan to mix in some blogs on the site development itself, and some stuff about me and why I've started up this site.
(I know me personally, I like reading about websites and their owners, how they came to be, etc. It makes me feel like I'm connecting with a real person and not a machine)

Beyond that, I'm quite overwhelmed. I'm not against looking into some of the Phillipines VAs to run a marketing campaigne but I also don't want to pay them to market when I'm not yet about to evaluate what good and bad practices they are doing.

I would suggest you just use the search function and look up the specific stage you are at and try not to jump ahead. In all honesty, or at least in my opinion you can quickly get lost in "what you should do" and waste a ton of time researching.

Quite simply if you have a niche that you think will convert and something you can offer them, build a squeeze page/sales page and find out where the crowd you are targeting frequent.

In essence try to get traffic FIRST or at least know where you are going to get targeted visitors from and then build your site.

If no sales, adjust the copy etc...

Most of it will be tweaking but the main thing is to get that traffic flowing.
